Please check over my baby shower luncheon menu

I posted about this a while ago - basic gist is that my sister is throwing me a shower, and she knows how much I love food and to entertain. She told me to pick out the menu and she will do the rest.  It is at my house and I will be pulling out the white table cloths, antique dishes, cloth napkins, the whole nine yards.

Shower is at 12:00.

Sandwhich loaf (most likely cheese, chicken, egg and maybe olive fillings)

Asparagas spears wraped in procutto (sp?)

Mix of green and purple grapes

Cupcakes (this is what she wants to do, not my choice)

 Pink punch, water for drinks.

My question is do I need another side?  If so, what would you recommend?

  • I think you need at least one more side and I'd add some more fruit.  Maybe a pasta salad or a broccoli salad/slaw.  Add some strawberries and a melon to the fruit.  It's lunch time people will want more.  Even just some terra chips and dip would help.
  • I gotta be honest, I think you need several more things:

-a starchy side like pasta salad, potato salad

-a veggie side like caprese salad, roasted veggie skewers or carrot salad

-a finger food platter like chips and 2 dips, dip in a bread bowl, hummus and pita or crostinis

-another small finger dessert like caramels, truffles or brownies

It doesn't have to be expensive or even homemade but you're having the shower at lunch time and people will want to make a meal out whatever you offer.

    This.

  • If you have vegetarians coming, they have virtually no options.  I would add two more salads and a cheese tray.
  • I've been drinking, so forgive me... but the menu doesn't concern as much as the fact that you're basically hosting your own shower.
  • She's picking out the food not hosting the shower.
  • Sorry I haven't responded, I've been out of town for the holiday weekend.

A sandwhich loaf is a very retro dish.  It was a staple back in the 50's/60's at ladies luncheons, baby/wedding showers.  I had one for the first time a few months ago - I'm still very taken with it as the presentation was BEAUTIFUL!  Here is an image that I googled:

    image

It can be made of many different things, but typically it is made of egg, ham, chicken, tuna, seafood salads.  You can also do olive, cheese or really anything else that is a sandwhich spread.  The "frosting" is cream cheese mixed with milk or cream.  It is very dense and filling.

Also, as you can see, it really takes up a whole plate.  So when you start thinking of things to serve on the side, it becomes a bit more challenging.

Since the sandwhich loaf has so much mayo/cream cheese/cream in it, I don't think it should be served with mayo based salads.  While I like th idea of the capresse (sp?) kababs, I want to stay way from the cheese due to the same reason I just stated.  Chips seem so out of place with the vibe/theme of the shower.  There will be no vegetarians/dairy/gluten/nut  issues with guests in attendance.

I will add fruit salad instead of grapes and perhaps I'll have my sister serve it in little cups or bowls to make more room on the side for other options.

Perhaps I could have my sister serve some finger food appetizers??  Any different thoughts now that we all know what a sandwhich loaf is?  :-)

And yes, sister is hosting for 10 of my closest girl friends.

  • Is there any way to make the loaf half that height?  It is very pretty, but I'd rather have less sandwich.

With this info I'd do a marinated salad- blanche some asparagus, broccoli, and cauliflower and marinate in italian dressing overnight.  On the day of toss in some cherry tomatoes.  Then I would do an orzo/pasta salad and a tossed green salad.  That would eliminate the dairy based stuff, but still give options for starchy and veggie sides.

I like the idea of a fruit salad in a separate bowl.  If it's a buffet you can have the fruit on the table so they have hands to serve the rest of the meal.

I'll give you the benefit that you know the palates of your friends/guests, but, to be completely honest, if I was served that I wouldn't eat it. I don't care for egg salad or ham, and the idea of having it squished together with a bunch of other salads on some white bread is even less appealing.  I'd go for a variety of small sandwiches with those fillings, or set out various breads, rolls, and/or mini croissants, and let guests make their own.

  • one person that doesn't like any part of the sandwich would be SOL...I hate mayo, my friend is a vegetarian...we wouldn't touch that sandwich...

    you need food!
