Night 2 of Ferberizing

i am considering it night 2 since my mom didn't quite 'understand' what she was supposed to do :P  i can't complain since she is nice enough to take her overnight.  apparently she still rocked her to sleep and after she cried for 15 mins at 2:30, she brought her in bed with her. so, on to last night.

it kind of sucks because we don't usually walk in the door until 5:30-ish and Z needs to eat dinner at 5:45.  we realized that we need to start winding her down for bed at 6:20 the lastest (so far. that could even get earlier based upon her cues).   so we didn't get to spend too much time with her before bed.  it's ok though, we have all weekend.

anyways, we fed her, played, then brought her in at 6:20.  i could tell she was already tired so we only read 2 books instead of 3 and then i nursed her.  she was falling asleep while nursing.  i placed her in her crib and she woke up like usual and started crying.  i stood there, rubbed her head and told her that i love her.  i walked out at 6:44.

after 10 mins of her crying (this wasn't as bad as the first night. she didn't scream. she just cried off and on. sometimes loud, sometimes not) i went in again 6:54. did the same routine.  i came out at 7:01.  same thing happened during the next 10 mins. james went in at 7:11.  by 7:20 she was asleep.

she didn't wake up at all until 6:45.

i definitely think it's working and i hope that now we have a few days where she is home and all, we can get to the point where there is less crying.  i am thankful that the initial screaming has ceased and it's just the bit of crying but it still hurts my heart.

Re: Night 2 of Ferberizing

  • It sounds like she's learning! I agree about the timing for dinner being difficult. We recently moved J's bedtime back to 8pm and found that he typically sleeps about 15 min more. So, the early dinner rush might be short-lived; you might be moving her bedtime later in a few months. But it still sucks. Thom moved his hours to 8:30-4:30 so we could start the dinner rush earlier.

Maybe I've turned into a callous mother, but at this point J cries out all the time in different ways, to communicate, that I've gotten used to some of it -- it's just his method of saying certain things.

  • Sounds like it is working...good luck.  I can imagine how difficult the crying can be.

  • It sounds like even after skipping a night, she's made some progress. Yay!

I've never read about ferberizing. Is there a certain amount of time that you stay with her after 10 minutes of crying?

i don't go by the book. ferber's actual method is like 3, 5, 7 then the next night 5, 7, 10.  we did our own version which was 10 every time.

she's already asleep tonight with like 5 seconds of whimpering! hooray!

this is either too good to be true and the rest of the night will suck or we did it!
