comforter question

Hi guys - happy easter :)

We have a feather comforter (I have no idea what kind of feathers..I was reading that there are lots of different kinds, like duck and goose) and I am thinking we need to switch to something different. I am tired of the feathers and fill all gathering in the bottom of the comforter, and I am tired of the dust and feathers that come from the comforter.  We spent a bunch of money on the dumb thing and it is really comfortable and warm - is there an alternative that won't get feathers everywhere?

TIA!

Re: comforter question

  • I have a down alternative comforter and we do not have any problems with all of the stuffing gathering or falling out.  IMO, it's just about as warm and fluffy, without any of the issues that feathers can have.  I got it from Bed, Bath, and Beyond with a coupon, and it was pretty reasonable.
  • As far as the feathers gathering in one place... try finding a comforter that features "baffle box" construction. This simply means that they have quilted boxes through out the comforter to trap feathers through out the blanket. Also look for a good, tight high thread count cover. This will help prevent the little feathers from sticking out. (A good thread count for the cover is around 300, thread counts that are to high often become less durable because the threads have to be stripped so thin to get the amount of threads per inch...)

I bought one at Macy's that we have been very happy with. Bloomingdales is also a great source for comforters. I worked for RH for a few years and theirs is very nice, but a little pricey.

This.  We LOVE ours from BB&B for around $300 (we registered for it :) )

  • awesome! thanks ladies, I'll go looking tomorrow.
  • if you look around, you may be able to get a seamstress or tailor to actually PUT baffles in your existing comforter for a much more reasonable price than buying a new one.  my aunt is a seamstress, and did it for me pretty easily.
