Color help with my garden

I have a bed along my front walk with a Japanese maple (true red), bordered by yellow Stella d-Ora daylilies and liriope (small blue flower clusters in late summer). There's also a lamppost which will be covered by morning glory (blue) in the summer.  I want to add some annuals in the open space between the borders and the tree/lamppost -- but what color?  I really don't want this to look like a patchwork quilt!  Last year I put in white alyssum, which was okay, but not great.  White pansies?  More blue?  Red?  The house is stone (tones of tan and grey) and the walk is bluestone.

  • I always think the more color the better, I would love to have your garden and would add some green hosta, pink primroses and orange daylilies.

If you like blue, white and yellow, then go with it. I'm one of those crazy "patchwork quilt" people who love lots of clashy colors in my garden, because I find it attracts more bees.

  • It isn't a crazy patchwork when things are blooming at all different times.  In my gardens I plant any color flower except for red or orange just because they are my two least favorite colors.  I plan to eventually brake the rule because I want to attract hummingbirds but I might stick with the more blue-red colored flowers instead of the orange-red ones.

I plant Lantana purely because I like the yellow-pink-orange bloom! So do the bees.

I tried a new color combo this year: peachy-salmon pink Geraniums with blue Lobelia. They look great together.

  • Thanks for some wonderful suggestions.  I guess I shall be fearless about adding more color -- guests will certainly have a cheerful welcome!
