How do you clean pillows?

Are they washable? I have regular and feather pillows and they need washed badly. How do you guys clean your pillows?

Re: How do you clean pillows?

  • I have never been successful in washing pillows. Usually when I wash the sheets I spray febreze or something on it. When they start getting old and changing colors I go and spend the 3 bucks to get a new one... Kohls always has them for cheap!

  • feather pillows gross me out, even tho I grew up with them.  Some were decades old.  I threw away all of mine that were passed down to me, and as soon as mother passed, I threw away all of her's too.

I've washed the fiber fill ones, but they clump up.  Maybe if I had used the bathtub instead of the washer, it would have been nicer.  I also dry them in the sun.  It takes all day.

  • There cheap.  Throw them away and buy new ones.
  • I've not had much luck with washing pillows. I usually just buy new ones. I recently bought a couple of fairly expensive ones that have more support and also bought pillow protector covers. Covers go on the pillow before the pillow cases. I just take the protector covers off and wash them.  Helps with extending the life of your pillows so they don't get stained, dusty, etc.
  • I've HEARD you should replace them yearly, but I usually replace them every 2-3 years - when they start getting stained and losing their loft.

  • Down pillows actually wash really well. I would only toss one if it was leaking feathers and I couldn't mend it. But then my pillows are not $5.

Put two in the washing machine and then toss in the dryer on low with some dryer balls or tennis balls.

After you get it clean (or replace it) then you can get a pillow protector which is like a mattress pad that zips on your pillow and is easier to wash.

  • I wash our pillows; they are a down alternative.  I remember the cheap pillows with cotton fill I had growing up would clump over time as they got washed, but these have stayed nice and fluffy.

You can also dry them with a couple of (clean) tennis balls to help fluff them, also.
