places to live? suggestions needed

Hello all - DH is being transferred to a company in Thousand Oaks in the summer (sometime in July/Aug), and we're looking for a place to live. I will be working from home for the most part, but my company does have an office in downtown LA (Olive St) that I would like to be able to go to 2-3 days a week, if possible. I went to undergrad at UCLA, and really have no interest in dealing with west LA traffic - so we were thinking about living in the Thousand Oaks - Calabasas area. However, I don't know - that's such a long drive to downtown LA, especially in traffic. Any suggestions for where to look for places to live? Budget is (hopefully...) 1500 - 1700/month for a 2 bd with a garage and/or storage unit. Am looking for something with character, not just a crappy old apartment (again, if that's possible)...

THANKS!

  • What about Studio City area?

  • Sherman Oaks is another option but it would probably be a pain getting to Downtown.  Burbank/Glendale could be a little closer in that respect.
  • I second Glendale area! Some friends of ours just move there, the husband works downtown LA. They love their new neigborhood!!

  • I actually live in Agoura Hills (north of Calabasas) and we LOVE it!  I also work in downtown LA, so yes the commute can be a bit too much at times, but I'm used to it.  It really all depends on what type of community you want to live in.  I lived in Sherman Oaks before moving to Agoura Hills and I liked it there too, but it was definitely noisy.  Granted I did live in an apt. and 1 block from Ventura Blvd., but it was one of their better areas in Sherman Oaks.

If you want more of a "suburb" type of area, I say shoot for some place near Thousand Oaks.  It's quieter, cleaner and friendlier in my opinion.  Just to forewarn you there are some not so great places in Thousand Oaks, but Westlake Village is also a great option.  I live in a 1-bedroom condo with a garage and it's in your price range, so for a 2-bedroom you might pay slightly more.  All of the other areas people have mentioned will definitely be cheaper, but they tend to be your standard apt. and the community is different.  Also if you plan to having a family the Conejo Valley area is great for raising kids as well as their school district.

Hope this helps a bit and if you have anymore questions just let me know :)
