In LA for a day...what do to?

I'll be in San Diego with my husband and 20 month old son in September and we plan to drive up to LA for the day, but we need some suggestions.  Restaurant recommendations, must see places to visit?  We've never been to CA and don't mind touristy attractions.  Thanks!

Re: In LA for a day...what do to?

  • Howdy!! There are so many things to do and see in LA, it's hard to narrow it down to just one or two. And unfortunately, I do have to say that with our not very friendly traffic, it probably would only be one or two sites.

    But ...here's a few ideas:

    Santa Monica

I feel like SM has so many of the things that make LA great (beach with a nice breeze, beautiful views, great people watching, good and varied restaurants ... there's a little amusement park http://www.pacpark.com/ (although I don't really know if any of them are appropriate for a toddler....but it's worth checking)

There's also a small aquarium here and a newly renovated outdoor shopping area (read--mall). Just past the mall is Main St. There you'll find more shopping and some good restaurants.

The Original Farmer's Market / The Grove

So you've probably heard about The Original Farmer's Market. Many years ago, they decided to turn some empty space on the property into an outdoor shopping/eating venue. There's a trolley that runs down the (otherwise pedestrian only) street...there are "dancing" fountains, restaurants (although I prefer the food stalls at The Farmer's Market) and ocassionally, you'll spot a celebrity or two. Bring cash because while most places in LA accept credit cards, many of the food stalls do not.

The LaBrea Tar Pits are also right near by. So you could go there first (if it's not too hot.. If it is, it'll just be stinky!!) and then go to the Farmer's Market/Grove.

If you keep up with any celebrities, you've probably seen pictures of many of them on the red carpet for movie premiers at one of the two movie theatres in Westwood. It's doable to go to The Grove, then drive west down Sunset (so you can see The Strip with all of the famous clubs & hotels---or you could go down Wilshire which would take you through Beverly Hills) then go into Westwood to Diddy Riese, which is a hole in the wall that sells ice cream & cookies. Now I realize this doesn't sound super exciting, but it's a really yummy ice cream cookie sandwich for a buck fifty. So you can go here- don't let the line stop you--it moves fast, and check out the places you see when movie premiers are held there. http://www.diddyriese.com/home.php.

LA gets a bad rep, but we have a lot of wonderful things to do and see. Please let me know if you have any more questions. =)

I came over here to ask about things to do, so thanks for posting!

Also, do you have any suggestions for a good beachy, relaxing place to stay?  H and I will be in LA (work trip for him) and then we wanted to go somewhere that would be a good beach town/city, not quite as big as LA.  Thanks!

  • Glad I can help. I have to say that I looked at your wedding pics and first--they are beautiful! And I LOVE Seattle. =)

As far as beach towns...I'm thinking right now what comes to mind is Newport Beach (which is just a little south of LA in Orange County) and then Santa Barbara which is north. I'll see if I can come up with some other places and let you know.
