Looks like i'll be joining this board soon. DH is being relocated to Phoenix. He'll be working near Sky Harbor international airport. Could you point me in the right direction as far as looking for housing? With a new little one, school districts are pretty high on the priority list. Thanks!
Have you seen my monkey?
Re: relocating to phoenix
There's a lot of differing opinions on housing... but it seems like there's really a lot of good areas in the valley, so it probably comes down to how far of a commute you want for your DH, and just your preferences in general.
I live in the Chandler/Gilbert area, and I love it here! I think it's very family friendly, but I don't know too much about the schools since we don't have kids yet.
I'm sure you'll get a lot of posts about various areas, but I just wanted to say hi and welcome!
I also live in Gilbert and love it. We just moved there about 6 months ago and it's great. Very clean, new, family oriented and the school systems are one of the best. I haven't had to use them yet but that was one of the reasons why we chose Gilbert.
Good luck!
I would also suggest Gilbert/Chandler you can find ones that are close to the 101 or 60 or I-10 and that way his commute wouldn't be so bad!
GL and welcome!
I live in E Mesa, but definitely recommend Chandler/Gilbert.
And hello and welcome!!
Welcome! Without knowing your priorities, it is hard to make a good recommendation. I work near the airport (Tempe side) and DH works downtown PHX. We currently rent in south Scottsdale and love it for the commute, but are looking to move a bit further north in the McCormick Ranch area of Scottsdale to buy a home (S. Scottsdale works well for us now, but we live around a lot of retired folks and we'd like to be near younger families when we start ours).
My biggest tip for DH's commute: avoid going west. Without clouds (most days in the Valley) driving in to the sun to/from work is miserable! Also, I know a lot of people are suggesting Chandler and Gilbert (both places are clean, safe in most areas, and great for raising kids), but the commute can be pretty long depending on where you go. My current commute is 10 mins and will probably be 20 in the area we are searching to buy. I lived several miles from the nearest freeway in Chandler so my commute was often 40-50 minutes during heavy traffic. I also really like the Tempe/Chandler border area, but it is a bit too close to both our parents for that!
Best of luck to you with your move!
I currently live in Southwest Phoenix. I really enjoy our neighborhood, it's very quiet with mountain views. However, I don't really know much about our school's. DH and I agreed before we went house shopping that our children wouldn't go to public schools in AZ. Just to give you a heads up- our public school system is severely flawed and while we have some OUTSTANDING teachers, our political climate does not support them.
That being said, in this city it's not just about district, but individual schools, and honestly it changes each year, and will likely look much different in 5 years then it does right now. It's sad to say but AZ ranks last in education now. DD will be attending a Montessori school until 2/3rd grade and then going into private schooling as I have no faith in any of the public schools in this state any longer.
(and I'm not a bitter transplant, I grew up in AZ and was a product of the Peoria Unified School District back when it was a top district in the state- public education in this state has gone downhill very quickly)
