What's your shoe policy?

Growing up, there was never a rule about wearing shoes in the house; we just used our best judgement.  If our shoes were dirty/wet, we took them off, but if they were clean, we left them on.  The last several years my Mom requires people to take their shoes off before entertaining the house whereas my Dad couldn't care less about it at his house.  Jason and I keep a shoe rack next to the front door and take our shoes off as soon as we walk in but that's just because we both hate wearing shoes in general.  Our apartment's carpet is a piece of crap and we know we are moving within the year, so we don't really care what our guests do, but whenever we get a new place, I think we'll do the 'shoes off' policy but wont super strongly enforce it to guests.

Re: What's your shoe policy?

  • Use discretion.  We typically wear shoes in, walk to the bedroom and pop em off unless they are dirty/wet.  Then they go right downstairs to the second landing until they dry/we clean em.

I usually don't tell others what to do.  We've had people come over and take them off as soon as they walk in I guess out of their own habit, and others tread all over the place with wet feet on our hardwoods (we intercept here and tell them to kindly remove or they can mop) but we have no set rules.

I feel weird when I'm required to take my shoes off.  I absolutely LOVE being barefoot in my own home, but I don't like being barefoot/socks on other peoples floors.

  • I typically take them off as soon as I walk in the door, and leave them in some random place where we ultimately trip over them.  Chris keeps his on for a while longer, because he's a busy body and goes outdoors for random things.

Really, though, we have no policy.  Our floors are laminate wood or tile, other than in the bedrooms, so there's nothing to get dirty that can't be easily cleaned up.

Ditto.  Unless it's one of my really close friends (you know, the people you don't bother to clean your house for before they come over).

  • I have never minded much until more recently when L got mobile. I feel like all we do know is clean the floors because we wear our shoes in the house. So now we try to take them off right when we come in the door and the carry them upstairs to our room or where ever..

We also dont make friends take their shoes off, UNLESS the weather is really gross and wet and then I do.

My sister is a stickler about taking your shoes off because of my nephew, especially in Boston because of the lead based paint that is in so many places because of the old real estate.  He doesn't crawl anymore since he's four, but it's still a concern to bring it into the house.

  • We do the same as PPs, use discrestion, dirty/wet leave them my the door otherwise you can leave them on. Our dogs track tons of crap in so taking your shoes off is usually pointless at our house. I also don't like taking my shoes off at other peoples houses, I just feel awkward when people look at my white socks. I guess a solution would be to biy cute socks.

  • We ALWAYS take our shoes off when we come in the house, as do our family/friends.  Chris' Dad leaves his shoes on, or brings them into the living room to put them on before going somewhere and it drives me nuts!

  • We don't have a rule, but we tend not to wear shoes in the house and often guest see our shoes lined up and take theirs off, but I truthfully couldn't care less. We have 3 dogs and the carpet looked awful before we moved in and just looks more awful thanks to Jack's housebreaking. We have shampooed the carpet twice but the stains come back so it looks like we will have to replace the carpet right before we move (whenever that is). Most people in our family don't have to be told to take off their shoes when its in-climate weather outside.

  • we don't have a rule...most of our guests leave them on, but I think that's because most of our guests live with animals that sometimes mess...we usually take them off but it is just a preference thing...
