Organic Means of Dealing With Grubs, Roly Polies and Ants

We just planted our tomato bed and found a ton of grubs, roly polies and several ant hills in the soil.  We shovelled out the ant hills.  Are there any organic or non-chemical ways to reduce/get rid of these bugs?

  • I haven't tried it, but this is supposed to work well.  It's made of a type of dried algae.  There is also a post a few posts down about it.

  • Milky sprore for the grubs.

    Terro products for the ants.

Look into Arbico beneficial nematodes, as well.

  • ditto the milky spore with for the grubs.  this isn't an instant solution, but it's a good, longer term one.  sluggo says that it works on roly polies too.

    not sure about ants.

Beneficial nematodes are great for this.

  • Most species of ants and roly polies aren't going to hurt your tomato plants. Leave them alone.

I don't know about the grubs.

Yep. Ants and pillbugs are not a big deal. Grubs eat roots, so work on those.

  • If the ants are really bothering you, you can pour boiling water on the nest.  We did this for a nest that was up against our house (they were coming inside whenever it rained) and it worked.

Our organic book suggested Orange Oil, you mic it with water and that generally work 90 % of the time for us, I don't really care about the ants our roly polies they don't seem to do anything.
