XP- Still low fever :(
Hello,
DD is 4 weeks old and had an on again/off again low grade fever since Monday. It's typically highest in the mornings. We took her to the pediatrician on Monday, when it started, and her highest temp was 100.3 (99.3 under arm). She also had a "gunky" right eye and very loose stool (and only doing one rather large BM per day). The pediatrician took her temp rectally and it was low again (98.4) so gave us some eye drops for her eye, and told us to watch her.
The rest of Monday she did great, same yesterday (ran a slight fever of 99 for a short period). She again only had one (very large) lose stool, but otherwise was fine. This morning however, she's been running a temp since around 6am, and is now at 100.3 (99.3 under arm). She's had 2 (still lose, but back to normal portions) BM's today (2am and 7am). She's eating normal and just fine. The pediatrician said unless she gets fussy, lathargic, stops eating, or has a temp above 101 to just watch her...but I'm still nervous.
Is there anything else I should be doing?

I'm sorry....Sometimes babies temps run slightly higher than our own. I was rather obsessive compulsive for awhile with Blake, taking his temp after our bout with RSV, only to finally realize his temp was always slightly higher, and our pediatrician said that it was normal. I would just watch her, especially since she is eating fine. The bowel movements changed soo frequently with Blake when he was that age, it was hard to find a "norm" for quite awhile. Hang in there momma, she will be fine
AND if the eye gunk continues, it could be a blocked tear duct. Blake had it for almost an entire year before it resolved itself. It's quite common, although a pain and you feel so bad for the continuous gunk they have to deal with. We were about a month away from the pedi sending us to an eye specialist for it when it cleared up on its own. They told us they wouldnt do anything before 9-12 months.
Thanks everyone. She's doing better now. We went to the doctor and they checked her over very thoroughly and said she still looks great.
Her eye's doing MUCH better since we started using the drops. In terms of her fever, when they checked her rectally, they said she was in the normal range, and asked us to buy a rectal thermometer and use that. We explained that the hospital had advised against that and she said that was primiarily in newborns and then the nurse showed us how to use one so as to not cause rectal trauma. She said we do need to monitor her just in case, especially because her birth mother was strep b positive. However she gained an ounce since Monday- so she's not losing weight, and her color/reactions/alertness were all great.
I feel like such a paranoid mom. Seriously. And I looked it to. I was a hot mess (didn't get to shower before going in, so my hair was wacky and I looked horrible).
Mommyhood for sure changes your definitions of "publically acceptable".
I know it is scary but I think E is probably fine.
FWIW I never add 1* for the underarm thermometer, I don't think it is that accurate. I just go with what it says.
Just keep an eye on her and possibly think about switching up the formula to see if that helps with her stools (which all they will be is runny for a long time)
what formula is she on now?
She actually had a normal stool at the doctor's office- go figure! She's on Enfamil Newborn. The pediatrician said that it could also be from her digestive track maturing. Her reflux is pretty much non-existent now and she said that's a sign of maturing. She's also been a little stuffy (nothing her humidifier/aspirator/saline drops weren't helping with) and sometimes swallowing mucus has that effect.
I will keep in mind about switching formula if it continues though.

It's good to be paranoid sometimes, that's what helps new parents learn....and gives a good working communication between the pedi and the parents. Sounds like you guys are staying on top of things and working it out with the pedi. I usually check A's temp rectally and I don't know if there is a huge difference between 4 month olds vs 4 week olds in regards to temps, but he had 1 time measure 101.7 Happened to be on the day of his checkup last week so we went in, held off on his shots since the pedi couldn't find a source, and told us to "watch him" over the weekend. He was low grade 99-100 all weekend long and when it lasted 5 days of intermittent fever she had us come back in. They did a ubag and checked his urine and turns out he has a uti and possibly pyelo (still waiting on his culture). We are hanging in the hospital now so he can get IV abx and a workup to make sure his kidneys are working right. Now he hasn't been fussy, ran high fevers, vomited, nothing. We would never have known he was sick for all the playful smiles and flirting he does, we actually thought he may have been teething for all the drooling and gnawing he's been doing the last 3 weeks. Weird, but that's my kid I guess.
Soooo.....maybe if your lo is still having a low grade temp despite the treatment for the eye gunk, if your pedi is willing maybe they will check her urine. I don't know how they do the ubags on girls, on little boys it would seem to be easier just point and leave be. Plus it was noninvasive and might be helpful in giving peace of mind.
You are doing a great job as a mom! I can't believe your little girl is already a month old! Seems like just a short time ago we were waiting to hear of her arrival. Hope you guys are doing well.
