Need some organization tips and advise...

DH and I have decided that it's time to move back to Florida from Chicago. We were in our early 20's when we moved here and now we have a family, etc. We've been here for 12 years and have accumulated a lot of stuff.

So, does anyone have any checklists and advice on moving a long distance with children...we're driving back. And this will happen in about 4-5 months. We are getting rid of a lot of big furniture that were hand-me-downs and things that can be replaced inexpensively.  TIA!

  • 1. Purge, purge, purge! It's amazing how much stuff will appear!

    2. I inventory all of my boxes by room. Each room and each box with its contents is written down into a notebook. That way, when we arrive on the other end and I need say, the coffee maker, I can go to my list and see what # box it is in. Although I don't have little ones, I'd think this would be expecially useful for toys and other small items that are packaged several to a box. For example:
        Kitchen
Box #1 would be labeled K1
contents:  mixing bowls, measuring cups, cutting board

DH thinks I'm crazy nuts to go through the trouble, but he sure loves not having to dig through 100's of boxes to look for his favorite book. Plus, it makes unpacking on the other end a lot easier b/c the labeled boxes can all go to their assigned rooms.

  • We do something similar to Shammy with the moving inventory.  We don't pack by room, necessarily, since it can be hard to fill a box with things from just one room, but every box gets a number and we keep an Excel spreadsheet with columns for Box Number, Item Description, and notes like Fragile, Do Not Crush, etc.  Keeping the list in Excel is really handy, because then when you want to find something, you can just hit Ctrl-F on the computer version, and you can sort the printed one by box number (for making sure all the boxes got on or off the truck and seeing what's in which) or item (for looking up where something specific is, alphabetically).
