Does anyone have experience putting a retaining wall in? The area is 7ft wide by 2.5 ft high.
Basically, I need to bring a slope up to level so my garden mulch this year doesn't get washed away by rain like it did last year.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice or products that worked especially well for them.

TTC since 2008

Yes, I build one in my backyard 12 years ago, then last year I tore it down and rebuilt it all over again in a different shape.
Here, if it's higher that 24" you need a building permit.
Yes we've built two retaining walls so far and I went to a short class on retaining walls. The biggest wall we tore down and rebuilt was a rock wall that you can read about here:
http://threeacres.wordpress.com/2010/09/24/rock-wall-redo/
The other one was a small retaining wall made with cement pavers/man-made block. It was much easier and quicker to build. For every foot above the ground you need the wall to extend 1-2" below the ground (sorry I can't remember the exact measurement). You'll need fill gravel under the wall, to step the wall back every row (how much depends on the height), landscaping fabric with more gravel behind the wall, and a drainage system (some type of pipe with holes in it leading the water away from the wall) behind the bottom of the wall. After the concrete pavers are dry fit you take them back off and glue them together with concrete adhesive. You'll also need a masonry chisel and hammer to adjust the size of pavers. HTH
