The weather

I just hope everyone is doing ok. Some big storms hit a lot of areas last night and have done a lot of damage. In Harrisburg we got very bad lightening storms and lots and lots of flooding. We also had a few tornados touch down. Lots of closed schools around here. Our entire city is practically closed down. This is very unusual weather for This area and I know we even got off easy. Stay dry and be careful out there!

Re: The weather

  • I don't watch much TV and don't pay attention to the weather reports, so when I checked my FB this morning, I didn't realize there were so many tornado warnings yesterday!  A bunch of my college friends are still in Georgia and they were all talking about it.  Scary stuff.

I heard the rain last night, but it was pretty short.  So I don't think my immediate area got hit too bad.  Not sure about the DC area as a whole though.

    I hope everyone is okay!

  • I heard this morning 137 tornadoes swept across the country last night!!  DD and Hizz, and anyone else from the southern states - hope you and your family and friends are safe!

  • I heard about the severe storms in the south this morning, and the death toll, but didn't realize the storms were also hitting the mid-Atlantic. We are having some warm weather with thunderstorms today in the Boston area, must be part of the same storm pattern. Yikes.
  • I'm anxious to hear from our Southern ladies to have peace of mind that they and their families are safe. This is scary, scary stuff.
  • They were talking this morning a lot about how Alabama got slammed, and I was thinking about DD and all our other southern/mid-atlantic girls.  I know Ames posted yesterday about the tornados, and it sounds like it got worse since then.  It is so amazing/scary what mother nature can do.  Hope everyone is well!

It was awful. I've never experienced anything like that in my life. Storm after storm after storm... Tennis ball sized hail, smashed out many people's windows in their cars. Debris on every road, flooding, trees down, power outages- even if you didnt have a tornado touch down where you lived it was BAD.

Steven's parents and my parents both experienced damaging hail to their house, the siding and windows broken.

We are just so thankful to be alive and safe.

Wow! I never saw hail that big! I'm happy that you and your family are safe.
  • Hizz, glad to hear you guys are okay!

We got really lucky this week. Even through storm after storm, tornado after tornado, we have no damage. Even our cars weren't damaged from the hail storms. We feel very fortunate.

Today, the sun is shining for the first time in what seems like forever, and I feel so wonderful!

  • I was hoping to hear from DD this am as well- I am hoping she is alright! I know we have a ton of stores we are sending emergency help to in Alabama- its our worst area in terms of service this morning.

  • I'm glad you're safe Ames and Hizz! I saw that DD posted on her FB last night that they were ok. I hope so!

We had tornado warnings yesterday afternoon/night, which is unheard of for our area. I don't think we had any touch down, but there was a funnel cloud in the county next to us.

    I hope everyone is ok!

  • This weather has been crazy!  Here in central NY we NEVER get tornados and we've had two tornado warnings in one week.  Freaky stuff.  The only plus to living in NY is that there aren't any tornadoes or hurricanes because lord knows we get every other type of weather.  We have a lot of branches down and there have been trees down and power outages.  Our lights flickered a couple times last night but we never actually lost power.  I was woken up several times last night by the sound of the wind of the rain.  It was insane, it really sounded like the wind was going to blow our house over.

I'm glad to hear that everyone is okay in the areas that were hit more harshly!

  • You know, I've read a bit about "Tornado Alley" shifting East in recent years due to various weather patterns, so it makes sense that states that don't usually see violent tornadoes or much severe weather at all are seeing this stuff.  I think it might be cyclical, there was a Super Tornado outbreak in 1974 that involved a lot of states farther east too.

I have friends in St. Louis who saw a lot of tornado warnings last week, so I think that pattern just keeps heading east.  I can't believe the damage at Lambert airport there.

I don't want to jinx anything but the last two years have been pretty calm in most of Nebraska for the most part, though I don't recall how rough it was in Kansas, Iowa and Oklahoma. Not that I want any of you guys to get more severe weather, but damn, I hope it stays the heck out of Omaha this summer. 2008 was a horrible year for us, it pretty much scarred me for life.  I can't imagine what it's like for those of you who really aren't used to seeing severe weather though.  I've grown up with it and it still scares me. I'm glad everyone is safe.

  • Yeah I'm used to server snow, not server thunderstorms and wind.  They scare the beegeezus out of me!

This. Thunderstorms terrify me more than any other weather system. Maybe cause they seem to strike so much faster and at random, versus the blizzards and hurricanes where you have days of warnings?

Also, lightning and thunder have just always terrified me. I still want to crawl under the bed when a thunderstorm hits at night.

    *nods*

last night the storm started at 4 am and the thunder was SO loud it literally shook the house. the wind was so harsh that it was this constant whooshing noise and the lightening was unlike anything ive ever seen. rather than individual lighting bolts, it was constant flashes for hours. like a strobelight.

we lost power at 4 am and when i left for work we still didnt have it back. poor Andy had to get dressed by candelight for a job interview.

  • Thanks, I'm glad we are safe, and I'm glad all of you are safe! The only damage we had was to our cars, they got some dents (sad) but our neighbor had a tree fall on their house so we are thankful that didnt happen to us.Also, many many people got their window

Thats interesting about Tornado Alley shifting! I hadnt heard that before.

I am also afraid of storms. You better believe last night i spent all night huddled in our smallest bathroom or in the hallway. With my pup in my lap.

  • All of this weather has been psychotic. I was watching live on the weather channel last night when the really big tornado hit Birmingham, AL. That is creepy. Watching it live. And all I could think about was how close it was to DD and that she and Robin were all right.

Personally I love thunderstorms, just not really severe ones. For once, we didn't get hit really bad yesterday, although they were calling for it. We had one nasty storm around 10pm and the wind sounded like a freight train out my window. That's what creeps me out.
