Where do you volunteer? Need inspiration ...

I'm looking for a place to volunteer. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter every weekend, but they closed several months ago. I miss having a volunteer job and would really like to continue volunteering, but I need some ideas for organizations that need help.

It doesn't have to be animal rescue ... although I wouldn't mind if it was. I'd be interested in learning about all kinds of organizations. The only thing I really don't want to do is fundraising. I'm a terrible fundraiser because I hate asking people for money.

I work at my "real job" weekdays, so I need a volunteer job that allows for evening/weekend hours.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

  • Right now I volunteer at an immigration non-profit and it's mostly day time hours.

Before law school, I volunteered at Inner City Outings which is part of the Sierra Club.  You take inner city youth on nature outings....hiking, biking, camping, canoeing.  It was an amazing experience.  http://ico.sierraclub.org/northstar/.

I've also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity (fun), United Hospital gift shop (boring), Children's Hospital playing with the kids waiting for appointments (fun), a nursing home (depressing) and tutoring kids (exhausting).

I really want to volunteer at a homeless shelter or domestic abuse shelter.  I just need to get my act together and make some calls.

  • The Sierra Club thing sounds really interesting. I even have a canoe :-) Thanks for that suggestion!

My church is involved with the Eagan Resource Center and they're always asking for help at the food pantry, but unfortunately all the open shifts seem to be on weekdays. There are too many other people with my kind of schedule who want the evening volunteer shifts.

  • I run a kids program for at risk kids at Central Lutheran Church, but that is done Monday mornings during the summer.  I luck out and get to do it even though it is during my work hours.

Hammer Residence works with people with disabilities in the Wayzata Plymouth area.  I worked there and built a relationship with a higher functioning group that lived in an apartment.  Volunteers can do just about anything, but I think it is most fun just to go there and hang out, take them to movies, dinner or other fun stuff (they pay their own way).  The people their LOVE their volunteers.

St. Joseph's Home for Children is run by Catholic Charities.  They take in homeless kids, run away kids and "can?t be at home" kids.  There are lots of options.  I know they showed me a room where people taught kids how to bake, they have a hair cutting place and bring in salon professionals......

  • I've volunteered with Second Harvest Heartland in the past.

Currently I am volunteering on a more regular basis with Team Ortho who puts on running events in the area. Each race usually has a lot of opportunities.

  • I volunteer for Tree Trust, which plants trees and has school planting throughout the spring.  I'm doing the Special Olympics for the first time this year and am super excited.

I have thought about a hospital, but they seem kinda boring and I would be doing it for resume stuff, not just to help out.

  • Special Olympics always has needs for volunteers to help them run events.  And I spent a year volunteering for TC Habitat for Humanity and I can say with 100% certainty that they couldn't do what they do without volunteer help.  Plus - you get to learn something too!
  • I used to do work for a local dog rescue. I also fostered kittens for the Animal Humane Society.

Then I spent a year volunteering for the zoo. They take volunteers for just about everything. When I applied, a spot had opened up in the aquatics center. So every Friday I was over there working in the kitchen, up to my elbows in frozen fish. I prepped the daily diets for the seals and sea lions, the penguins and the puffins. Then I cleaned the show pool for the Sparky show and ran the music for the shows as well. I really enjoyed my time there and working with the keepers. They love those animals so much.

  • you could try your local Jaycees chapter (there are quite a few around the TC)  They have a variety of volunteer opportunities - community service type events, kids events, fun fundraising events (beer pouring at local festivals) - and some have multiple events a week.
