Gift help - gardening tools

Hello.....I am trying to get a gift for my best friend, and she has just gotten into gardening last year and loves it. I would like to get her some really nice tools, bonus points if I can get a personalized tote bag or something to store them in. I saw a set on Red Envelope but I don't know how high quality the tools are. I know I've used some spades and such from Lowes and Home Depot and they were not very nice, so I'm hoping there is some high end brands I can look for.

TIA!

Re: Gift help - gardening tools

  • Honestly, I wouldn't get anything too "nice" -- all of my gardening tools just get covered in dirt! A pair of two or gardening gloves is always useful. Do you know what tools she already has?

I have these and these and love them.

  • Hmmm I can ask her mom what she already has in terms of gloves, thanks! As far as 'nice' tools, I really mean high quality. I have broken or bent tools I've gotten cheap from big box stores, so I was thinking there has got to be more professional grade ones out there. But maybe not?
  • The ones I linked are pretty high quality IMO. Much much better than dollar store specials :) And for "something nice" I was thinking of your comment about a tote bag to store them in. You definitely want good quality tools!
  • For pruners I like Fiskars.  For gloves I like Atlas or other thin similar gloves.  For hand tools I love my Radius set!  They are ergonomically friendly so I can use them all day and not have my wrists hurt or my carpal tunnel flare up.  I'm pretty hard on my tools and they still look like new with only a few extra scratches on them.  Wink  They replaced some cheaper but middle of the line tools I had from a big box store like HD most of which bent or broke.  The best part is they don't cost a lot more than my old ones.  When my fellow gardeners in my garden club recommended them I was sure they would be really expensive.  Don't waste your money on the large shovels or tools they sell though they aren't worth the extra cost.

All of these I can buy from my local nurseries.

  • Ditto Fiskars.

I also have those little Fiskars, and they're great for soft stem pruning. I have 2 pair.

are the pruners I've had the longest (over 7 years). They're #1 among industry professionals.

  • imageThese are Felco #2 pruners, a MUST HAVE for any gardnener. This is one of those tools that lasts forever if you take care of them properly. I also buy the pop up gardening bags as gifts frequently. They're great for collecting weeds or grass clippings in.

If you buy any other garden tools I would suggest making sure they have a good warranty!

  • I ditto the fiskars, felcos and pop-up garden totes.

And...I personally wear a kitchen apron to garden.  Like, a cute one from Antropologie. It helps keep my clothes clean and I can put my gloves or trowel or seed packets or whatever in the pocket while I'm moving around.  Yes, it gets dirty, but it can also be washed.
