Question for the Teachers...

School Nursing is something I've always thought about transitioning to one day.  If you're a teacher, any inside scoop on how they do the hiring for nurses?  I'm sure these jobs are extremely hard to come by since the schedule is so good, but I'm wondering if I should try to volunteer on my days off from the hospital to get a "foot in the door".  TIA!

Re: Question for the Teachers...

  • I think you're right about jobs being very hard to come by. The nurse at my school has been the nurse there since I went to school there 20 years ago. The nurse at my previous school is my Friends's mom and she has been there forever too. With that said, I know they are always looking for substitute nurses, so you might want to start there. Also I'm not sure where you live, but harford tech has a nursing program so they might look for teachers.
  • I would try to substitute too.  That's always a good way to get your foot in the door.  My school has had a lot of turnover, but when I was in school, the same nurses where there forever.

AACo nurses are hired through the Dept of Health.  They are hiring right now for next year if you are qualified.  And I would sub for the nurse or even for health asst to get a foot in the door if needed.
  • Just saw this job: Health Services Specialist . I know you don't have experience in schools but, just remember qualifications are always the complete ideal, not necessarily what they think they'll get. I'd apply if you are interested.

  • My mother is a school nurse or a director or something like that in Anne Arundel Co.  She's actually a state employee so she works all year round and works at camps and such in the summer.  If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to pass them along to her.
