Best thing for getting oil stains out?

I work at a place where I make fresh popcorn everyday for customers - no not a movie theatre. Although it is made in a set up similar to what you see at a movie theathre, or maybe a carnival, or at Target in their snack shop. I use coconut oil that comes in a tub and is in solid form. I take a big spoon full of that and then dump in a cup of popcorn with flavoring salt. When handling the oil, or in the midst of dumping the kettle of popped popcorn out the oil will spatter on my clothes. It is not coming out with regular washing and the only thing I have tried is pinesole (mom's suggestion). Does anyone have any other ideas? DH bought me an apron to use because I was getting so frustrated with ruining my clothes, but what can I do for the clothes that have spots on them now so I can wear them again?

  • Fels Naptha works pretty well for getting out grease stains, but you have to use it before you put the clothes through the dryer.  If you put a greased stained shirt through the dryer, the stain will probably not come out.

  • Dish soap worked for me too. It might not get it all out the first time, so it's worth retrying. Don't let the dryer discourage you.

The apron is a good idea to prevent it from happening again. Do you have to dress up for work?

  • Dish soap.  I've even used it on stains that I put through the dryer.
  • I used to work at an Italian restaurant where we wore white button down shirts and served oil with the bread, so I had to learn quickly how to get oil/grease out of my clothes!  As weird as it may sound, WD-40 sprayed directly on the greasy area will work.  Just spray the WD-40 on the spot and then throw in the wash & launder as usual.  Somehow the grease gets out the grease.  I tried dish soap, but that didn't work for me.  GL!
  • Lestoil.  It's the only thing that I've found that works at getting oil/grease out of clothes, even after they've been through the dryer.

Put a little on the spot(s), let sit a while and then wash.  Usually it works the first time, and if not almost always by the second wash.

  • Dawn is good for breaking up porteins, a PhD chemist told me.

I use 409, the cleaning kind, and it really does the job.  I don't know if I'd use it every week, but it works great for me.  Spray the 409, give it a minute or two to soak through, and into the washer

  • I've gotten movie theater popcorn butter off of jeans with one wash with Tide Stain Release (the orange stuff).  I haven't met anything yet that it hasn't removed!

  • lighter fluid!  i was ready to throw out a sweater with an oil stain on it, so i thought i'd give it a try after hearing about it.  i let the lighter fluid sit for a while, then threw it in the wash.  after drying it, i inspected the sweater and the oil stain was gone!
