I had a great night...

...

at the emergency room. I woke up at 2am with what I thought was bad cramps. Went back to sleep and woke up at 3:15am thinking someone had shot me. Brought me to my knees in the bathroom. My first thought was that it was my appendix, but it was on my left side. Danny and I had the niece and nephew spending the night so we had to wake them up and take the to MIL's on the way to the hospital. As we were going to the hospital, I could feel the pain moving from my side (sharp and stabby) to my groin (dull and burning).

At that time, I told Danny, I bet it's a kidney stone. (As I've had one in 2003). So, admitted to the hospital at 4:30am and had a lovely CT scan and told it was a kidney stone. Hoorah.

So now I have to pee in a hat and strain my urine searching for the evil, vile culprit of my pain.

Hope everyone else's weekend is going as great as mine!

Re: I had a great night...

  • Ugh, Mal, I'm so so sorry.  That is the last thing you need.  Did they at least give you good drugs so you can be comfortable?

My weekend is okay.  We're waiting for a friend from college to come over and BBQ.  I spent the morning cleaning.  I'm about 5/8 of the way done with actually quilting my quilt after the intense work I did on it last night.  Other than that, no excitement at all.

How was your week?  Any word on the job?

  • No, they didn't give me medicine, although they DID offer it to me many, many times. Truthfully, by the time we got to the hospital the pain had considerable decreased. It was more dull and throbby and like an uncomfortably full bladder. So, regular ibuprofen was okay, so I denied any heavy meds. They offered intravenous motrin, but I said it was all right not to have it.

It was weird how quickly the pain moved because my first stone took about 5 hours to pass from my kidney to my bladder and this one moved within an hour and  a half. (3:15-4:45)

The rest of the week was all right. I had a blast yesterday at the WVU veterinary research farm. The kindergarten kids went on a field trip. I got a kiss from a cow. Big Smile Pictures will be on FB soon.

And no word on the job. My supervisor is actually on my last nerve now (because I read about it in the paper when she said she'd "personally" keep me informed). And I haven't heard a dam thing from her. But besides that, I think I'm beginning to cope.

  • Sorry about the stone, but I'm glad you feel a little better. I've never had one, but they look miserable! Hope the rest of your weekend goes more smoothly.

They are miserable. Before I realized it was a stone, the pain was so intense and awful, I told Danny, "if this is what labor is like, I don't wanna!" (Granted this was in the throes of pain and at 4am...) I have been told by many women who have had both stones/kids, that if you can do a stone, you can have a baby like a pro. So, I think I'm okay. • Oh. My. Gosh. I've never had a kidney stone, but they're one of my worst fears for some reason. I'm so sorry you had to go through that.

Here's to hoping you pass the evil thing with as little pain as possible!

Thanks, mckee! They really are truly awful. This time around the pain was closer to my front left (as opposed to the first one in 2003 when it was in my lower back). And I tend to worst-case-scenario things and my first thought was my appendix. Then I said, "wait a sec, the appendix is on the right side of the body. Oh dear Lord, my BC failed and I'm having an ectopic pregnancy." The pain was so different from the previous stone that I really had no clue what it was until it started to migrate towards my bladder. It was really scary at first. Plus it didn't help that my period started this weekend and I had been spotting off and on all day yesterday.

  • Thanks, everyone!!

I'm feeling a lot better today, just annoyed and inconvenienced. Having to strain your pee after you've been told to up your fluid intake is just a biitch.  Stick out tongue I hope this stupid thing passes soon; I hate feeling like I have to pee as soon as I get off the toilet from peeing.

  • I was hoping it had passed already but I guess not.  Hoping that it goes away soon!  How long will they let it go before trying radio therapy?

Probably indefinitely. It took me almost 3 weeks to pass my first one in 2003. When they did the CT scan, they said it was already in the bladder (and therefore, they couldn't see it on the scan) and would pass on its own...eventually.

I actually said that to Danny in the hospital. I just came back from the CT scan at 5:45am and all tired-goofy I looked at him and said, "It's kidney stoooones!" I love that episode.

"I want the drugs, Ross! I want the drugs!!"
