Hostas and Mums

We have a small area in between our front walkway and the side of our garage where we can plant. I have been offered free hostas and mums from family members. I know hostas will work here since many of our neighbors have them.
Would hostas and orange mums together look off? We were thinking we may be able to alternated them, or plant the hostas in the middle, with orange mums on either end of the walkway. Opinions?

Re: Hostas and Mums

  • I would plant the hostas in the middle with mums on the ends.  Make sure to leave enough room for each plant to grow- my hostas have gotten pretty large. When I transplant and have extra growing space that will be bare for a few years, I plant annuals in the meantime.

  • Hostas multiply and spread out a lot.  I keep my mums in containers.  I'd plant the mums at the end of the walkway
  • Hostas need shade, mums need sun. You need to match their placing to these requirements.

Depending on where you are, you might be okay with the hostas in the sun. I live in 6b and I have hostas in my front yard which gets full sun and they do fine. They will get really big if you don't split them, though. Same with mums, so plan the space accordingly.

My thoughts exactly. Over the years I've had a lot of people insist to me that their hostas look great in full sun, but when I see them I never agree.

Some types of hostas need  shade while other types need sun.  The family member giving you the hostas can tell you which type this is.  Shade loving hostas die in the sun and sun loving hostas shrivel in the shade.
