Update!

Thanks to those that have given me such valuable advice this past year in all my job hunting. It's been a long road--endless applications, interviews, networking...so I had one final interview on Friday, and now word is back from all 3 jobs and I thought I would share.

Job #1: I had a second interview at the domestic violence shelter Wednesday. It was a group interview (as in, about 10 other advocates at a conference table to interview me) and was a bit intimidating. The shelter was pretty nice and the interview went well. Even though I had applied to a part-time position they informed me that a full-time one had opened up so they wanted to consider me for that. I got the call Friday that they wanted to offer it to me!

Job #2: The financial firm also called with a job offer Friday. I declined it however, as I could tell it would not be a good fit for me overall. I am happy to have been able to get another offer though.

Job #3: The non-profit called me back for a second interview, which I had on Friday. They were a bit odd, and I was getting the feeling that it may not be a good fit for me. They called me today trying to squeeze in a 3rd interview via Skype. They really liked me my first two interviews, so I have a feeling I could get a job offer if I decided to go further with them.

With that said, I have accepted the position as an advocate at the domestic violence shelter. Although its an hour drive and a night shift, the pay is decent and I can continue working at my part time job for a lot of extra money. It is right in my career field and I really liked the people I will be working with.

I'm a little nervous about balancing two jobs with such different schedules, but it will be worth it I think. I am just so elated right now to finally have a full time job in my field--it is a real relief.

Has anyone worked a night shift before? I'm worried about the initial adjustment period of working 11pm to 7am. Any tips on managing it? I don't want to rely on energy drinks and I don't drink coffee, so I'm looking for some energy boosters to keep me going the first few weeks.

Thanks again to everyone who gave me advice on everything!

Re: Update!

  • I've never worked a night shift so I don't have advice there, I just wanted to say congrats!!!
  • Congratulations on the great opportunities!

Out of curiousity- what is your schedule for the P/T job you're keeping? That will help with giving good advice about this.

I have worked 2 jobs almost as long as I've been working. For a long time, my schedule was 7am-4pm, then 5 or 6pm (depending on the day) through anywhere between midnight or 4am.  Basically I was getting between 3-5 hours of sleep each night. That lasted almost 3 years, until my body couldn't handle the schedule anymore (I was getting sick a lot!).

I would say that if you can- take naps during lunch breaks if exhaustion starts to wear in- I got in a daily 30 minute power nap for a while there.  Also, Working out when you can- if you can only get in 15-30 minutes a day, do it. Working out will give you the energy boost that caffeine and energy drinks could never accomplish for me.  I prefer working nights- I function best at night, it just all depends on if you can get to sleep right away when you get home or not.  HTH.

Don't worry about tomorrow. After all, today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday. Take each day as it comes...one at a time. Midnight Baking Adventures Blog
  • Good to hear from someone who did something similar. My part-time job is flexible, I can change my availability when needed.

Thus far my schedule is looking like this:

Full time job will be Sunday through Thursday, 11pm to 7am.

I will work most of the week at my part-time job something like 3-9ish, sometimes shorter shifts. I'll sometimes take Friday and Saturdays off, sometimes I'll work them. I'll always have Sunday off from my part-time job.

My part-time job is just a cashier job, and I can nap at my break time there. Its a simple job, not too much work. They're thinking of promoting me to the wine section as a sales consultant, which will be me just wandering around talking to customers and sometimes stocking the shelves.

The full-time job at the shelter is mostly a desk job--providing an ear to the women at the shelter if needed, managing the crisis line, doing data entry/administrative tasks, and going through the donations.

I exercise at my part-time job when customers aren't around (which can be frequent). I'll do it as well at my new job. I've been wondering whether I should bother keeping my gym membership once I start working both. Good to know that it would be worth it even if its hard to go at first.
