Misc. Recommendations Needed

1. Chinese food (we just moved here a few months ago). Need a good chinese restaurant outside of PJ Changs. We are in Clive. What's your favorite?

2. Kitchen show rooms - a place where they have several vignettes of kitchens and maybe bathrooms/tubs too. I doesn't have to be in Clive - anyway in the DM / W. DM subs is fine. I went to the Kitchen and Bath Idea show this weekend - what a disappointment, very outdated.

3. We have a hilled driveway. DS has learned how fun it is to put his tonkas on the top of the hill and roll it to the bottom - which goes into the street. We live on a quiet cul de sac but still ... would rather not me or him going out into the street to get them. I looked at driveway gates online but for a 100 bucks they don't seem to get good reviews. Anyone have something they use to create a barrier between drive way/sidewalk and street?

TIA!

  • We order China Jade for lunch all the time! It's A-FREAKING-MAZING! 515-222-1422

I love Menards for all things home, there is one on Hickman close to the interstate.

I have an AWESOME handyman! Isaac, he's the best! And they could come out and give you an idea of what to do? As they do it all.

Great thank you!! Me + Chinese = in love!

I wasn't sure if there were stores here that were dedicated kitchen and bath show rooms (like  kohler store).

I probably should have been more clear about the drive way gate thing. I'm not talking about a REAL gate. I've been looking at the kidco/kidsafe roll out driveway gates that you roll out to visually block off the driveway from the street (kind of like a doorway baby gate only it is larger for the driveway) ... but they are 100 bucks and don't get good reviews.

Maybe DH could construct something though ... instead.

  • OH China Jade is my favorite, I live on the south side and I would drive to clive to get it! OH! SOOO yummy!!! Best Orange Chicken EVER!

There is Grante Transfermations, but I wasn't a fan of their prices. :) There is AIM Kitchen too, they're local too! http://aimkitchenbath.com/

Great thanks! I like going to the show rooms for ideas. Then try to find what I want cheaper elsewhere. I'm kind of a dork ... I love looking at show room kitchen and bathrooms. lol

  • i love cool basil in clive. it's thai rather than chinese, but i think they have some chinese food on their menu. it is in the same parking lot as pier 1, toys r us, etc.

  • For the driveway I would probably try like a plastic or metal mesh fence for gardening or erosion control. I would think that would be a fairly cheap solution. Not the most attractive but practical and easy to remove. You could secure it with stakes on either side of the driveway and just lay it down or remove it when the driveway is in use.

That might be what I do. THAT is basically what these 100 dollar kid fences are that are sold online. I just can't justify spending 100 bucks on a mesh fence that I could probably put together for 20 bucks ha.

    Thanks!

  • I love Mandarin on 128th.  For cheap take out Chinese, we order fromTsing Tsao in Waukee next to Warrior Lanes.  Good flavor.  We just ordered from Tsing Tsao Friday night.

  • 1. Chinese food: My favorite just closed so I'm anxious to see the answers too

    2. Kitchen show rooms - We did our kitchen at Consolidated Kitchens and Fireplaces, but also looked at Gilcrest Jewett.

    3. We have a hilled driveway...  We just got a ton of deer fencing very inexpensively at Menards. We used it around our garden but it would be great at the end of the driveway. They have plastic or metal posts you can use with it on either side of the driveway and you could roll it out of the way when you're not using it or take it down completely.

    Ditto, both are great.

As for kitchens, we looked at Gilcrest and all the big box stores. I went to that same showroom you talked about, it was horrible.  I find there isn't much for show around Iowa in terms of the new or up and coming ideas.  I looked online and it magazines for my inspiration, and just toured new homes. People put a lot more into kitchens that were going to be for sale in homes.

    1. We like Dragon House (109th & Douglas) and Great China (86th & Hickman) in Urbandale. For a little 'divier' atmosphere, Shang Yuen at Merle Hay & Hickman is good too.

    3. Our neighbors just bought a roll of rabbit fence and put it across their driveway to keep the kids in.
