Can anyone help me figure out what this plant is? Cat sick :(

Hello!

I don't venture over here much, staying mostly to "The Bump" but I hoped I could ask for some help!

My DH has had this plant for 5+ years that his old cat (who we had to put down a year ago due to old age/just his time) used to chew on with no ill effects (it was discouraged).  To be honest, that cat was a bada$$ who was found stuck in a hunter trap and so him living to be old as heck and having a stomach of steel doesn't surprise me.

Our current cat, Monster, is delicate even though he doesn't seem it.  He has a very sensitive stomach and chewed on the same plant but is now really sick.

Saturday he went to the vet after vomiting for 24 hours, mostly plant/bile, and then after a anti-nausea shot and fluids we were told to monitor him.  Saturday afternoon/Sunday still lethargic (he's a very energetic cat normally) and refusing to eat/drink.  Brought him back to vet today, did x-rays - nothing aside from the norm.  Vet asked us to try and figure out what the plant is which will be the easiest way to treat it if that's the issue.

Hours of googling later, I still have no idea.  Anyone know, or think it looks like?

TIA!

  • cats can get allergies too.   Maybe he's allergic?
  • I'm thinking you should probably get rid of the plant so it doesn't happen again.  How about bringing the plant or a piece of it into your vet to have them see it first hand.  Looks like a long leaf Ficus to me, but I am not positive.  I hope your kitty gets better soon.
  • I'm pretty sure it is a dracena.  It's a common houseplant.

It is a Dracaena. Cats love to eat them, but I've never seen any get sick from doing so. If you google, some sites insist they are highly toxic while others insist they are safe. This is probablt due to the fact that the genus is so large. At any rate, that plant doesn't even look healthy, so why not get rid of it?

  • Thank you to the helpful posts, I think it is a dracaena, our old cat never had an issue with is, our kitten is really sick from it...so it is gone.

I agree, it looks pretty ill - its getting way to much sunlight and it was eaten, dug in and maimed.  Note the dirt on the sill, it was placed so that the cats shouldn't have been able to get to it, but our cat stretched, knocked it over and then chewed heavily on it.

    Its being re-homed.

    Thanks again!

How do you know for SURE that this is the cause of your cats illness? Is there ANY possibility that there could be something else going on with your cat?
