Help me decide-- form or function? re: bangs

Why is it the minute our bangs grow out (after swearing not to do bangs again), the urge to cut is so strong??

Here's the deal:

Form:  I look good with bangs. With a little effort (zapping with hairdryer and round brush), I can look pretty put together.

Function: I drive a convertible and scuba dive.  Both things are important to me, and bangs are not suited to either.  I need extra accesories to accomodate the loose hair and it drives me nuts.  Plus I'm lazy and with bangs, there's no roll out of bed and go (like with beloved ponytail).  I'd always have to do something to my hair, which 1) I'm not good at, and 2) again, I'm lazy.  Bascially, bangs just don't fit my lifestyle.

The way I look at it is this:  without bangs, I can do no effort and look OK.  It's a major effort to look beyond OK, because my hair takes a lot to "do" and I never bother.  With bangs, a little effort yields big payoff, but there is never the option for no effort.

What say ye Nesties?  Bangs, no bangs?  (I know, no pics.  But just based on the logic, what do you think?)

  • Sounds like no bangs would be best for your lifestyle - you'd look ok with no effort and be happier doing the things you love to do.  It sounds like it's relatively easy to style your bangs, but if you don't want to put in the effort you shouldn't stick yourself with a hairstyle that requires effort.

  • This is the exact reason I haven't had bangs in decades. I can't deal with the upkeep. I vote to grow them out.

  • Alas, as I'm reading the no votes, I'm saddended.  Which means I want bangs, doesn't it?  I think I'm just worried that I'm overstating the "OK" that I think I can look without bangs.  I mean, unless my hair is in a ponytail (or in pigtails like today, since I'm bringing back adult pigtails Stick out tongue), it doesn't look too swell.  Maybe I don't look "OK".  I may have to post some pics tonight.
  • I also vote no bangs, especially with the humidity around here in the summer.

But, if you really want them, then do it!  Some people really do look great with them.

LOL -- that, and a Bump-it, and you'd be set!

    I vote for bangs. :)

  • @ssw: lmao!

i also vote for bangs. i know that for me, if i spend a few minutes on my bangs and then pull the rest of my hair back, i just look and feel more put together. when i don't have bangs and pull my hair back, i look like i'm going to/coming from the gym. which is fine when that is the case but not so much at work or in daily life.

would something like this help for scuba diving?

bwa ha ha ha...I agree, this is definitely the answer ;-)

and funny that you should post this, b/c I was just thinking last night that I need a little change that that bangs would be nice for the summer.

  • Eh, if I ever went back to bangs, it would not be in the summer!! First, no amount of primping matters the second I walk outside in this humidity. Second, I'd likely be one big pimple. Embarrassed

So I just deal with my big-ass forehead and move on with my life.

I had a doll when I was little that would grow long tresses when you pumped her arm up and down. Then it'd shrink back with the press of a button. I'd want that for myself. Bangs today, none tomorrow!

  • I may be in the minority here (and it's probably just my own personal preference speaking), but I say bang it up!

Do you have blunt, heavy bangs? Could you ask your stylist about side-swept or textured or something? I used to have the round brush bangs, too but recently my stylist cut them so a quick blowdry with fingers makes them look 'done'.

Also - if you have lighter bangs it'll be easier to pull back. Those giant rubber band-ish headbands are still in (I think) and that or a small bobby pin or barrette pulling your bangs straight back or to the side will work with the ponytail look. It's one, cheap accessory you'll need and a very, very quick extra step, but for me at least, it wouldn't be too much hassle if I really felt I looked better with bangs.

That's what I was going to suggest. I have longer side-swept bangs and think they make my usual ponytail look a little more polished, but I don't do a thing to them. I clip them back all the time with a barrette when I work out or am bumming around.
  • I just got bangs a few weeks ago, and I kind of already hate them. I'm coming around, but it's a lot more work than my usual blow dry/flat iron or ponytail. And you look much worse in the morning - bedhead is real!

That said, it sounds like you really want them. If you know how to style them (and it sounds like you do) I say go for it. You can always pin them back if it gets too humid, and I use these Goody headbands to get them out of my face for workouts.
