I'm turning the big 3-0 on Saturday and I don't know what to do in celebration. What I WANT to do is go to New York and see a show and spend the night. This doesn't feel feasible with a 1.5 year old. Then I thought we could go to Monticello for a day trip but I'm kind of blah about it now. I want to do something more than just dinner, but I'm feeling unmotivated to come up with it on my own.
On a side note - people always ask me what I want for my birthday (Christmas, etc) and the truth is that I really don't care about getting material things. I always say that it would mean more to me for someone to organize something without me having to make all the decisions. I know they are just trying to get me what I want, but I honestly don't want anything. This year I asked for more free time...
Re: Need birthday ideas
why don't you have a party?
My friend's 40th was this weekend and her husband got together her friends adn did a dinner for ~20 @ the Melting Pot. It was totally last minute and he organized it ina 3 days, but It was fun.
I also went to fun birthday party at Marrakesh in DC. Its the Morroccan place/ w belly dancers, music, etc. Its fun and unsual. That would also be fun w/ just you and DH and a few friends - Sophia would probably enjoy it too.
Can you get a sitter for the night?
I normally just want a night/morning "off" whenever I can get it - dinner out, stay in a hotel, sleep in, etc.
Why doesn't the trip to NYC feel feasible? Is it because you don't have anyone to take DD, or because you don't wish to leave her overnight? I think that sounds like a great birthday celebration!
This is another overnight trip versus a daytrip, so you may not want to consider it, but I always hear such good things about New Hope, PA, and DH and I are eager to do a weekend away up there. I know the Mella&T has been and has some specific recommendations.
Something that you can do as a family - maybe a trip to Hershey? You could go off to the spa for a treatment or two, visit the park, and do a nicer-than-average dinner that's still kid-friendly.
We don't have anyone to watch Sophia over night. Haha, I have no problem leaving her over night.
you know. .. alot of the teachers @ DD's daycare do babysitting on the side. Especially if there's a younger, single teacher there, you might be able to have her watch Sophia at your house.
You could always bring her to NY... I was a nanny for a 1.5 yr old and a 3 yr old and it's totally doable. Central park (there are tons of playgrounds/have a picnic, the Central park zoo has a petting zoo), the museums (including the Children's Museum) and there's a fabulous children's theater in Times Square (Egg and Spoon)...
ETA: oh, and for gifts I just always say Barnes and Noble gift cards so I can get books for my Nook.

I kinda want to go to NYC w/ DD now! Maybe this Fall we will go w/ her!
I planned my DH's 30 Birthday a few years ago. He knew about the party and it was fun to get all our friends together. Now for my big 30th Birthday last year we went to a local winery. It was a lot of fun. Obviously we didn't take DD with us.
Happy Birthday by the way. I know a lot of people who are born around May 7-10th.
You should! I loved being a nanny and taking the kids to new places (except the woman I worked for was a nightmare, haha). There's tons of stuff to do with kids!
