Anyone know of a good, affordable hair stylist?

I'm new to the area, and I hate getting my hair cut. They usually get it wrong, and they're often rude. I would love to find someone who would come to my home, let me come to theirs, or if nothing else just be willing to take their time, and be friendly. Please don't refer me to a salon that charges $30+.

Any help is appreciated :)

Thank you!

  • Is $30+ expensive?

  • We're also going to need to know which area you're looking for.

FYI:  A lot of people that I know go to people who charge more than $30.  $40-60 seems to be the going rate for most of my friends and that seems to be an average for DFW.

  • Considering that for healthy hair you should get a hair cut every 6 weeks... yes, I think $30+ is expensive. I just need a cut.

Yep. I pay $20, and I go to a family friend who's been doing my hair since I was 3. That's the only reason I get that price.

So, I think if you want under $30, you're going to have to go to a SuperCuts or something like that.

  • I hate to say it, but I'm not sure you would find a place that would give you a good haircut and be nice and friendly for under $30.  It's expensive to live in Dallas.

Yes, I realize that... that is why I mentioned affordable :)  I don't care about the area, anywhere around DFW. Obviously I can't be picky. I just think $520 a year is a lot to manage split ends, and I would like to find someone I can go to regularly.

     I live in Fort Worth.

  • Oh goodness.  Unless someone has a regular Pro/Super Cuts person they like then I'm not sure what to tell you.  Anytime I've ever strayed from my regular stylist (who is 2 hrs away) I end up paying $50+ at the mall.

We do have several beauty colleges around that might be a good option.

Honestly, unless you have a shorter style that you need to maintain, you can go 8-10 weeks without a cut.  Then you can pay more for a good haircut.

Of course, if you have a bob or shorter style, that won't work.

Well you just have an answer for all our suggestions, don't you.

ETA: I'm of no help.  I know of no place other than Supercuts/Procuts that would charge less than $30 in Dallas.  I'm not familiar with Ft. Worth.

I do like my regular Super Cuts person but she's in Denton, if you feel like traveling.

  • I agree with Michelle.

Unless you have really short hair, you can go 8-10 weeks and still keep it healthy. My hairstylist tells me every 8 weeks is ideal, but if you have healthy hair to start with (don't color the crap out of it, use good products, don't fry it, etc) you should be able to go 10 weeks. And that would cut down on your costs if you could go an extra 4 weeks.

Before I moved here I knew a lady who had a miniature salon in her home, and she just had people give her what they thought fair. She was good, friendly, and wasn't going to pretend her time was worth $50 an hour. In fact, in Florida, $25 could get you a really nice cut. I know I must sound cheap, but that's why I think it's crazy everyone wants $30-60+ to take off an inch of hair.

     Thank you

I'm sure you can find someone like that in the DFW area. It'll just take time. That's like finding a needle in a haystack. Stylists like that in this area are definitely not a dime a dozen.

  • I go to the Toni & Guy school in Carrollton.  I think they charge $20-$30 depending on the length of your hair.  They have always done a good job with my hair.

I went there one time, with a friend while she got her hair done.

Sarah, I'm sure you have a good experience every time.

But, my friend didn't-at all. The people were rude to her, and didn't do what she wanted at all. They did what they wanted with her hair. And she left crying.

Getting a haircut in this area can be pretty expensive.  Is there a huge cost of living adjustment between Ft. Worth and where you used to live?  That could be the reason for such high prices here.  I don't necessarily think people here pretend their time is worth $50.  I just know it's really expensive to live in this area.  I wish the lady you knew in Florida would move here, because that sounds like a steal!

  • Well, you appear to have stumped us!

I pay a lot of money to have my hair cut, so I'm no help with suggestions, but I will say that I usually only go about every 12 weeks or so. I do color myself one time in between. My stylist is really good, and my cuts really do look good for that long. Even when it's short, it grows out really well.

Aww I hate that!  They actually messed up on my hair once, but the girl was so sweet and fixed it right away.  I have been dying my hair the same color for a while now, so when I go in they already have the formula.  And I know how I want it cut.  So I just tell them exactly what I want and I haven't had any problems.

I'm sorry your friend had a bad experience! :-(  I have been going there since I was 16 with no problems!

  • Or maybe you could go to one of the expensive-ish salons and just not get the extras.  For example, if you don't have them wash your hair or have them wash your hair, but not style it.  I'm sure that would help lower the price.

Yes, that would help. A big part of the cost is the style and products they use on your hair after they actually cut it.

  • You want a stylist to take time out of their already busy salon schedule to come to your house, or allow you to come to theirs, to cut your hair for less than $30? I would think that would cost you more since they have to work around you, & put gas & miles into their car.

I very recently graduated from cosmetology school. We charged $9 for a cut. Awesome price, yes. Most of the students are friendly, and there are always licensed supervisors around to help. However, I believe you get what you pay for. You want a cheap haircut? Paying so little, you'll get one. Just sayin'.

Well, it's good that you're from FL.  I like FL.  However, you're in Texas now and I guess women here pay a little more for the up-keep of their hair.  As I told someone recently, you can't be upset that people put a different value on their craft than you do.

  • Wait wait wait... my time IS worth $50/hour.
