my hubby wants to plant hops plants...

so my hubby wants to plant a bunch of hops plants along both sides of our house, but i'm afraid it will look trashy! Has anyone had experience with this???!!! I think it's a cool idea to grown  your own hops for brewing beer, but Im picturing a really unattractive landcaping project here! Is there a way to make it look nice thats affordable?

Re: my hubby wants to plant hops plants...

  • We just planted some on Sunday!  We're trying to make it as organized as possible- we put raised beds behind the garage and will attach a simple twine trellis to the wall to guide them so they don't end up all over the place.  I'll let you know how it turns out!
  • Golden hops are planted out here as an ornamental. The flowers aren't anything special, but I think the strobials are interesting.

Here's some landscaping hints: Oregonian, Great Plant Picks, Paghat's.

I've been looking for a good spot to put one myself. It's the suckering and size that are holding me back.

  • I don't know if either of you have dogs, but just as a note, Hops, in any form,  are extremely toxic to dogs. So if you have poochies, make sure that they cannot come in contact with the plants, bc even a small amount can trigger a reaction.
  • We thought about planting this but then I did some research and found out it can grow 15-20 ft each year..or something crazy. Needless to say we decided against it.

Well, they die all the way back at the end of the year, so it's just 15-20 ft that they'll get. Still, big.

  • We don't have any in our yard, but when we visited the Dogfish head brewpub this summer, they used them as a canopy to their outdoor seating area.

Sorry for the huge pic - but this is the only one I could find online.
