zone 5 veggie garden ?'s

When is the best time to plant vegetables in zone 5? We're thinking tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, squash & zucchini.

Thanks!

Re: zone 5 veggie garden ?'s

  • I'm in 5b/6 and our LFD is May 10th.  I've read to transplant tomatoes & squash 2 weeks after the LFD.  Not sure about onions.
  • I'm zone 5a, and the only thing we plant early (before mid may) are onions and lettuce. Pretty much everything else goes in after memorial day.

  • I planted onions (and peas) several weeks ago.  According to some website I found, our last frost date was the end of April.  I planted our tomatoes and zucchini last weekend.  I'm planning to plant peppers (plants) and cucumbers (seeds) in a few weeks.  I got the planting times from the book Square Foot Gardening.
  • Its good to see others haven't planted yet either! I was getting nervous. Hubby is building my garden this weekend and I will plant May 14th.  I was going to plant tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, bell peppers, pumpkins and squash.  Does my timing sound right?

  • I am in Zone 5 and for the past 3 years I have planted my garden on Mother's day.  I usually do Tomatoes, Bell peppers, Cucumber, Wax beans and Jalapenos.  This year Spring is kinda late but we haven't had any frosts in quite some time (in Michigan) so I am not concerned.

  • Thanks! Marisbiss- I am in Michigan too. I think we're going to plant around memorial day only because my sister is getting married next weekend and we are hosting rehearsal dinner at our house. I was worried memorial day would be too late, but sounds like we will be ok. I don't plan on starting anything from seed this year because we weren't prepared, so it will be all transferred plants.
