Building Garden Questions

Hi ladies!

My husband is building my garden this weekend for me.  His plan is to build it up with 2x6's and fill it with sifted loom.  I will add the fertilizer when I put the plans in the weekend of May 14th.   I planned on planting large and cherry tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, red and green bell peppers, squash and pumpkins.  I am in zone 6 in southern NH.  Does this sound like a good plan?  Did anybody else build up their garden? Does this really work better?  Also, he was going to surround it with chicken wire? Is this the best way to go?  We plotted out where the garden will go and its size (10 x 20).  Should I add other veggies too since the garden is so big? What is the size of yours?

Sorry for all teh questions... this is our first year and there is so much to learn!!!

Re: Building Garden Questions

  • We raised the area for our garden up a bit by building a retaining wall from random sized rocks, nothing fancy. We filled and amended from there.

As for the plants, for your first year it may be better to stick to what you have and only do 1 or 2 plants of each. The tomatoes will get HUGE and take up a decent amount of space (more than you think) so make sure to cage them with a really tall cage.

Green beans wander so having some kind of fence around them would help too. They don't get too tall but like to vine out.

Pumpkin and squash like to wander at ground level so watch the space for that too.

GL gardening is so much fun but a lot of work.

  • Are you sure you are zone 6?  I am zone 5 in North Metro Boston.  Even with southern exposure, plants that are only hardy to zone 6 do not do well.

The raised bed plan sounds good as long as you have enough drainage in the soil.

You do not mention how many of each plant.  Squash and pumpkin need a lot of room to maneuver.
  • It is interesting that I post one message and six arrive.  We are having thunderstorms locally and this may be affecting the computer signals.   I apologize for the partial duplicates and hope that the moderator will delete the duplicates.  Thank you.
