WWYD: Cucumber starts died :(

I transplanted to early.  I thought we wouldn't have any more frosts and I transplanted last weekend because I'm going out of town this weekend.  It looks like everything except my pickling cucumbers survived.  But all four pickling cucumber plants look like they are gone :(

I can't decide if I should call it a wash this for this year and just get my pickling cucumbers from the farmer's market or try direct sowing and see if I can still get some even though it will be a later harvest.  Also should I wait a bit to see if they bounce back or just go ahead and put some new seeds in.

Re: WWYD: Cucumber starts died :(

  • I started my cucumber germination indoors, I haven't transplanted yet, and already a quarter have died.  I think you should restart the germination indoors.  It's only about 50 days before harvest, so you'd still get your pickling cucumbers in less than two months from now.  I think I still can't even transplant for at least two more weeks because the ground is too cold.

  • I'd order a few plants from an online company instead of trying more seeds.  My strawberry plants from Gurneys or Burpees (I forget which one) were mailed to me at the time to plant them for my zone which is nice and now I have blooming plants.
  • I would suggest to try the direct sowing, I always grow my cumbers on a mound, which keeps the seeds warmer, and have always had luck growing directly from the seed.  You will be surprised how fast the new seeds come up, it should be within 14 days.
