Does anyone have a roomba?

I have been vacuuming every.single.day and I may just start to cry.  Our dog sheds sooo much and our little one is crawling all over so he just wipes all her fur up and when you pick him up he looks like huge dust bunny.  I have to use the lint roller on him when we leave to go in public or take a nap in the crib.

Anyway, I was thinking of getting a roomba to try and keep up on it but I have a few questions:

How well does it maneuver around things?  Our main floors are hardwood and there are frequently toys/furniture around so I'm wondering if it's worth it?

Also, how much fur/dirt can it hold.  My dog seriously sheds a ton and I'm wondering if it will pick it all up.

If you have a specific model or type you recommend please let me know...I seriously may ask for this for mothers day :P!

I don't have a Roomba.  I want to get a Neato at some point, it has an IR eye that maps out the room and can spot things to go around.  It goes in straight lines as opposed to bouncing around.  I've never tried either, but I've been drooling over robo vacuums for a while.  The Roomba has a wide price range, the Neato's around $400.

  • we have one (if you search on the board there are a bunch of other posts too that might help).  we have the pet one... cannot remember the number.  We have a yellow lab that sheds like its her job and hard wood floors.  Our roomba does get stuck under a certain pair of chairs but that's the only place so we know where to find her (yes she has a name... Reba) when she isn't on her home base.  the only toys on our floor right now are dog toys but it either pushes them around (stuffed toys) or bumps into them and turns around (kong)  we don't have any small toys that it would suck up but I wouldn't think that would be a big problem with the way the roomba is set up.  It holds a good amount of hair but we have to empty it each time we run it.  You can get a higher capacity bin for it if you don't want to empty it each time.

For us it has saved a lot of time but we still have to touch up when we want the house to be really clean. It does not replace vacuuming completely but definitely helps us.  I'd get one somewhere like Bed Bath and Beyond (use a 20% there too!) that way you can return it if you don't like it.

Oh one other thing... it isn't quiet.  the motor is not "loud" but you can definitely hear it throughout the house and it bumps into things and can make noise so if you have a light sleeping LO you might not want to run it while they sleep if they are near by.

  • I do! And a dog, 3 cats and a 10 month old, so I can certainly feel your pain! It moves around really well  in open spaces but toys or other small objects do have to be picked up before hand (or kicks into an out of way pile). How much dirt/fur it holds depends on which model you get. There is a pet specific on which is supposed to pick up hair really well but we just have a basic model and it picks up all kinds of crud. It will clean a large size room with out having to be emptied if I run it a couple times a week. Check out overstock.com, they always have them for a reasonable price!
