So disgusted w/Internet...
So, last night, I was online with my 9 year old daughter b/c she wanted to find some cute pictures of monkeys (she's totally into monkeys right now). Anyway, we were finishing up so I closed out the page we were on and what popped up? A full screen of pornographic pictures!!! *%*&^(*%#
@(*! They were NASTY too...I mean, like worse than Playboy stuff...more like Penthouse stuff. I won't even begin to describe what we saw. It was horrible. I practically pushed my daughter to the ground trying to cover her eyes and I swung her around in her chair so fast she didn't even know what hit her! She saw it though. There was no way she couldn't b/c, ya know, it took me a second to register what I was seeing before I could react. I was so upset that that happened. I don't even want her to know that nastiness like that exists in the world. I felt so embarrassed and sick to my stomach and I know she felt embarrassed to. I asked her if that has ever happened to her before and she said no. I told her that she can't do any web searches without me being there with her. I'm not the most computer savy person, but I'm thinking surely there is some way to ensure this doesn't happen again right?
Re: So disgusted w/Internet...
oh Monica, sorry this happened to you and Haley. I think you can block pop ups (just not sure what type of computer you have an how to do it on yours) as that might have been what came up? And you can also put a child lock/login on the computer as well to ensure that she can't access certain sites (not that she would on purpose). My sis and BIL did this w/her step daughter.
You can always call me and I could probably walk you through it over the phone if you don't figure it out on your own - but I'm guessing you will......
HTH and hate that it happened!!! You're a good mom though!!!
never used it, but understand it is good:

((hugs))
so sorry that happened to you guys. it's so hard to do anything on the internet these days without some sort of suggestive either ad or something else getting in the way.
The same thing happened to my mother, but I know it's just bc I have a disgusting uncle who had been using the computer. It may be a virus or something?
AWW Man that does suck!! Sorry that happened to you guys.
I know that if you do a search on yahoo for images, you can turn a "safe search" on. Other than that I know there's parental locks on computers like what websites can't and can be viewed. Although the easiest is turning the safe search on. When you search images from yahoo, there should be wording at the top saying "turn safe search on"
I am sorry that happened! I understand the frustration. Not sure about any solutions as far as programs - I have Windows Live Care that keeps mine pretty clean.
Just a practical, everyday step is to delete your cookies and temporary internet files regularly.
These ladies have already given you some pretty good advice!! Make sure you turn your popup blocker on! It will keep most of those ads from being able to just pop up and ruin your fun with the kids!
Our youth program at the church is always talking about some system that you can install on your computer. It keeps things like that from getting where your kids can see them...and it also keeps them from being able to pull up suggestive sites! It might be the same link that Lauren posted...I just can't remember the name. I know that a few people that sit beside us on Sundays bought the program on disk at LifeWay Christian Store!
I am sorry that you and your daughters fun was ruined by those ads! Hope any of this helps
This looks like exactly what I need! Thank you!
How do you do the child lock? Sounds like a good idea...I don't think Haley would intentionally go on any bad sites, but it would still block them either way.
How do you delete your cookies and temp files? I am a moron when it comes to this stuff!
Lisa! I love the beautiful pic of Jenna in her baptismal gown! So precious!!!
