Re: Poll: home projects

  • Nothing major on this end, a lot of little things that are overwhelming me...I want everything done NOW!

Within the next few weeks, we plan on power washing the exterior of our condo and doing some landscaping of our patio as well as possibly purchasing a patio set and organize the garage.

other goals: replace door bell, replace porch light, replace entry door knob/lock as well as the doorknob to the garage, pick bathroom paint color, replace bathroom medicine cabinets, faucets, hardware, and possibly sand/stain the cabinets.

I'm exhausted just thinking about it...

  • I am going to paint our rental. Right now it's white on off white on whiteish blue on beige. Basically, it's the embodiment of the elderly woman who lived her before us.

Last weekend I created a library in our guest room. My aunt gave us a really nice futon, and I arranged all my bookcases around it. There's a great reading lamp, some fluffy pillows and a nice view of the trees out back.

Next projects include building a lego display shelf in DSS's room, finding a very simple, large desk for the office and decorating the master bedroom.

  • We really need new planter boxes at the base of our patio cover.  The existing ones are all eaten up by termites.  Of course, we just found out we have less money than we thought.  I don't know if the project will get done or not.  I don't know that I want to rent a big saw and do it myself (even though they're really simple)
  • We're still newbie homeowners and since this was a flipped property, some stuff we want to  just make it look nicer.

    - H is cutting down front tree little by little and making progress

    - adding window tint on the patio door which is also in the dining area since we get the afternoon sun here and it gets hot.

    - add screen door to front door and patio door.

    - Finish painting master bedroom (which I'll finish this weekend), start painting hallway, pick color for office & master bathroom.

    - plant some perennials including jasmine on the back fence.

    - remove tanbark from backyard and replace with sod and some stepping stones

    - Lay tile down in both bathrooms since the 1984 vinyl floor is still in there (cheap investors).

  • what are some of your home related projects you want to get through this year? What's your game plan?Professional: Au Pair's room COMPLETELY fixed.  We have already gotten bids back from 2 contractors, and have decided to go with 1. Take down rest of the hedge, put in fruit trees. This will have to wait until late fall, early next year due to timing of when you should plant trees. Also have to wait for the cash flow ;-)There are lots more actually, but we kinda just conquer as we go.  any DIY? We are lucky that my dad is a contractor, so we do a lot ourselves with his help. I also am pretty hands on. But get really depressed when things don't go my way.  Project completed: Just to AW a little bit, we got new washer and dryer, which was a big project, and set up the 'nursery' in our room, and the baby's dresser in the laundry room (the changing table feature of the dresser coupled with cloth diapers made sense to go in the either the bathroom or the laundry room.

  • what are some of your home related projects you want to get through this year? Major ones: Finish painting the exterior of our house. This is a project leftover from last summer. It took us way more energy and time than we estimated. Also want to restain our front porch. I have one last room in our house to paint the trim white and the walls a green shade we bought a few months ago. There is also a space next to our fireplace that would be great for built-in shelves. That's a project for my husband though! What's your game plan? For the exterior projects I'm just waiting for it to warm up outside! I think the indoor projects will wait until fall.  any DIY?All of it!

  • There are lots of projects that we'd like to do, and they're all going to be DIY. But they'll be on hold as soon as we resume our IF treatment or whenever (if?) I'm expecting again.

    For sure, this summer, we'll:
    - fix some rain water (from our neighbor, ugh) irrigation issue in our garden
    - fix the sum pump, ugh
    - decorate all the rooms (picture frames, new curtains, floating shelves, indoor plants, etc)
    - organize the garage (putting new shelves, building a platform to put the washer/dryer on)
    - plant more flowers in containers and in flower bed
    - plant more veggies (I've started some already)
    - sew some cushions for our outdoor built-in benches
    - stain some bi-fold doors we got for free from Freecycle, and repurpose them to be outdoor shutters to our patio door

Later this year or some day in the future:
    - put hardwood floor throughout the house and tiles in the bathroom (and kitchen?). We've done it in our previous home, so we're willing to do it again in this new place.
    - frame our bathroom mirror
    - find a way to hide the closet mirrors in our guest bedroom, without removing the mirrors.
    - find a way to hide the closet in our master bedroom, since there's no room to put a regular door. I'm debating between a nice curtain, a barn-style door, or bi-fold doors.
    - repaint/stain an old ladder so I can put flower pots on it on the patio

    - plant a persimmon tree (maybe)
    - install a rain barrel
    - I want to pick a free pallet and do something with it, for fun (maybe some shelves)
    - maybe install a dishwasher

    Hmmm, maybe it's too much?

paint the bathroom at some point over the summer.  i need to scrub and then do a kilz primer coat in one corner because of some mildew there.  so long as i'm doing that i'm going to paint most of it white, but the one wall will be a tan/brown accent color that will look good w/ the floor.  the rest i'll paint white.

get the garden planted this weekend... ugh.  also, transplant the climbing rose bushes that are currently in the front yard.  they're in a terrible spot where they don't get enough sun, there's no trellis for them to climb on.  whoever planted them there is a buffoon.  i have a nice spot all picked out for them near the deck out back.

dh needs to trim the hedge between our front yard and the neighbor's, and cut the fricking grass.  if he doesn't get his act together w/ housework, next time we move i'm insisting on a townhouse w/ an itty, bitty patio or something.

when we get back from our trip, i want to get the deck cleared off and set up so we can enjoy it, now that the weather has finally gotten nice.

  • We have a lot to do this year. Paint the bathroom, tile the kitchen floor, finish the damn cabinets, refinish the deck and possibly build a patio. We're also toying with a basement reno.

    I'm tired already. :)

  • Omg, so many!

Finish painting the rest of the interior of the house.

Paint our exterior trim (that will be delayed til fall).

Insulate and drywall our shed/workout room.

    Fix/replace various lights.

    Put ceiling fan in bedroom.

    Furnish and decorate living room.

    Build raised beds for garden.

Dh wants to make a pond.

Get dual-paned windows (truthfully who knows when we can afford that. I'd like to replace the linoleum in the kitchen too, but again, who knows when).

My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • there is so much we want to do with the new house...we are limited financially since i am off on maternity leave for the year.

currently we are repainting room by room...finally DS's nursery should be finished this weekend.

next up will be doing new curtains and closet organization, then remodeling the ensuite in our room.

kiwis are big DIYers, so we will probably do a lot ourselves.

  • DH just started installing some crown molding in our entry hall, dining and living room. We also plan to do some more involved landscaping (flowers, shrubs, ground cover, etc...) That will all be DIY.

Just had a whole house fan professionally installed, what a difference that will make this summer.
