Hostas under Dogwood?

I'd like to plant under my established dogwood tree.  I know they can be sensitive with their shallow root structures.  Do you think this is a bad idea?

Re: Hostas under Dogwood?

  • I would stick with plants that don't need to be divided for under dogwood since their root structure would be damaged everytime you dig under them.  Here's some more detailed info that might help.  A lot of people recommend small azaleas or rhod. under large dogwood plants.  And remember to not add soil to the top of the dogwood roots as you are planting.
  • Pretty much everyone in my neighborhood has a freakin dogwood in their front yard. I'm temping to walk around and take note of whats under all of them. I can't imagine that they all have nothing planted under them but who knows?
