Dogs and cat food... how do I make it stop?

Another question.... how do I get my dog to stop eating the cats food. The second she is out of our site she eats their food. I have been picking up the cats food, but they are used to being able to eat whenever they want. Any training tips... or do the cats just need to get used to it?

TIA!

Re: Dogs and cat food... how do I make it stop?

  • when we had a cat and a dog growing up we had to put the cats food up on a railing so the dog couldn't get it. I have no idea about training tips but that definitely worked.

  • Our cat food is in a room with a cat door on it so the dog can't get to it. If it were out in the open Brady would definitely have a feast. I have no training tips, but would suggest just putting it where the dog can't reach.

My father puts their cat's food on a side table in the dining room. The cat can jump up there to eat but the dogs can't reach. Maybe, if you don't have another room, something like that might work?

  • When we had our dog, he always ate out of the cat bowls (and the litter box).

So the baby gate doubled as a dog gate so the dog couldn't get downstairs (we live in a split) but the cats had no problem going up or down.  So maybe you can put the cat bowls just out of the dogs reach??

  • You'll probably not have much luck getting the dog to stop :)  Cat food is really high in protein (and i guess this makes it taste good?) which is why dogs love it so much.  I've been told it's not good for dogs to eat cat food but not sure how true that is.  Best bet is to just keep it out of his reach.  We did the same thing as a pp and put a baby gate up in our basement and keep the cat food and litter box where the dog can get it.  good luck!
  • one cat eats in the bathroom, one eats on the cellar stairs.  They only get fed twice a day and the rest of the time the food is out of sight out of mind.  But if the cats ask they will be get their food bowls and a shut door.  This is only thing we have found that works with our dog and the cats.
  • We have the food in the basement and she has a cat door to be able to go down there to get it.  Otherwise, like Brady, Daisy would have a feast and Ruby would starve.
