DH and I are trying to figure if/where we want to move in a couple years. We can not sell our house right now because we are majorly upside down on our mortgage. We can't even refi. I don't love the town we live in. It's too quiet and I don't know a single person in this town besides our 70 year old neighbors who live in FL half the year. Most of our friends live 30 - 45 min away. Dh's Sis/BIL and parents live 5 - 10 min away, but his parents may move to CA. This area is very LCOL.
My parents, where I grew up is South of Boston. I sometimes would like to move near that area. I miss the beach, and have a lot of close friends and aunts and cousins who live out there. The houses/COL are a lot more expensive. However, we both may get better paying jobs and DH may be more likely to get a corporate daytime cooking job.
We also have talked about North carolina. By BF and her husband moved out to Wilmington 5 years ago and love it. We have visited and want to move out there. We could get a house on the beach for what our house here is. The job market may not be as good, and it may be that hard to be that far away from my family. I don't want to have to use all vacation time to travel home, esp. as my parents age.
We are starting to hate NE winters. I think a would like a more mild climate where there are still season changes, but not insane snow and cold.
Re: Hypothetical where should i live?
Hmm...that's a toughie! I hear you on the winters and LCOL.
We've considered moving to a LCOL area like the Carolinas, but when I researched salaries, I would have to take a huge cut, which would negate a lot of the benefit. We had 3 different friends/family members move down there from the northeast and all of them have moved back within 10 years. That, plus being so far away from family has pretty much ruled it out for us.
I think you should move to a LCOL area in the Northeast that's better suited to you and see if you like it better before making a really big move.
