Early intervention

DD was just referred for it because she is still isn't able to sit unsupported.  Anyone have experience with it?

Re: Early intervention

  • I don't in RI, but do in MA.

It's a wonderful resource and easier to receive if you're referred by your pedi (at least it is in MA). If our pedi suggested it for either of the girls, I would not hesitate to have the initial evaluation, and then make a decision as to whether we continue or not. If nothing else (if she doesn't qualify for services), they'll be able to give you some ideas as to help her get to where she needs to be.

    good luck.

  • I do! We are using their services because my son does not speak at 18 months old.  We contacted Meeting Street Center and their wait was very long for an initial evaluation, so I contacted the Trudeau Center (both highly recommended).  Trudeau came out within 2 weeks, and did an intake appointment gathering all of our information.  Then they set up an appointment for an evaluation. 3 people came to our house, to observe Domenic.  One of them did the activities with him and the other 2 were in the background just watching and taking notes.  They evaluate all areas of development, to know the childs strengths as well as their weaknesses.  They write up a full report before they leave your house and then tell you if your child qualifies based on how they scored on the eval.  Then you will be assigned a therapist or whatever you need,  for services.  Most of the time they come to your house but they do offer play groups and other services at other centers too. So far, they have been great to work with. Good luck.
  • We went through the service a few times, first was when she was very little b/c she was a preemie and didn't qualify b/c there ws nothing to really look for at that time.  The next time it was rec for the same reason as you right now.  After all the steps mentioned in prev post, I then went to physical therapy in providence.  They gave us great ideas, one that you can start to do not to help with sitting up is to use the musical play table with legs.  take off 2 legs and let it lean, then use a boppy pillow around/behind DC so when they do fall back/to side they won't get hurt if you can't catch them.  But they lean forward to play with the toy and start to get teh balance a bit, i foubf it to really help and gave DD somerhing to do on her own.  I have to think of some other things they told us to do to help.  We then had to contact EI again for DD due to speech issues.  SO they have been very helpful.  GL
  • i'm in school for occupational therapy....so of course i'm all for it!

let me know if you have any questions or if i can help in anyway! GL

Thanks for the info.  I didn't know anyone who had gone through it so didn't know what to expect.  I called Family Resources and they took my info and will have someone contact me to set up an appt within two weeks.
