I currently have a Sony Vaio that was purchased in Dec. 07'.
It gets moderate use, Music (via iTunes), photo's, photo editing, internet, some work related use (Microsoft Office).
Recently, it's been laggy - have to shut down, and restart at times.
I kinda want to make the switch to a mac (macbook pro, i5 processor).
So, how often to replace your laptop? Are you a frequent upgrader, or do you wait till it dies?
Re: How long do you keep your Laptops for?
I use a laptop daily for work and usually upgrade every 3-4 years. I have had a Macbook pro for the last 4 years and just upgraded it. I love it. My old MBP only had 1 Gb of memory and it was starting to slow me down a bit. I just got an MBP with the i7 processor and 8Gb of memory and that makes a huge difference.
For windows computers, it sometimes helps to reinstall the operating system and everything to clean it up. That will speed it up a little bit.

I try to keep them until they are just too slow to use anymore. So, about 5 years.
three to five years. honestly it is wear from daily use and technology changes so much in that amount of time. In five years your computer is completely obsolete.
