do you have a rain barrell?

we got one and i love it.  I am amazed by how much water it has collected so far. Do you have them piggy backed for over flow? are mosquitos an issue?  how should i keep water "fresh"?

tia.

sometimes all you really need in life is a pink wig.

Re: do you have a rain barrell?

  • Ours has a lid & the downspout goes directly into it.  So, mosquitos aren't an issue. If you have one w/out a lid, put a fine mesh screen on the top. The screen will prevent debris from getting in & mosquitos from laying eggs.

We have ours overflow into a drain, but I want to get another barrel (and that would would overflow into a drain).  Sometimes leaves get in & I don't worry about it.  I mean, the water is for your plants, you're not drinking it, so freshness isn't really a concern.

  • We have 1 in the corner of our yard and is not attached to a downspout.  It has a grid opening on top with a mesh cover.  Small pieces of debris do get in, but not enough to really effect the water.  I dropped a mosquito dunk in mine at the beginning of the season last year and did not notice any mosquito larvae.
