  • Fave: There's stuff to do

Least: Its so spread out & I wish we had a good public transportation system so I could take a train to work

  • Favorite - Very diverse with food, things to do, neighborhoods, etc.

Least - It's just so spread out and there's no public transportation or easy way to get some places.

  • Fave: the beach, lots of nonchain restaurants, can always find something to do.

Least: Wish it was more walkable.

  • Favorite:  my dog is here

    Least favorite: The weather.

"You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you." - Dale Carnegie
  • Fave: The amount of things to do. I feel like there's a festival/concert/event of some kind going on every weekend.

Least: It's a toss-up between the humidity (although that's all of the region, not just here), and the sheer size of the city mixed with a lack of a decent public transit system.

  • fave: Weather (except the humidity of course) and, generally, there's enough to do.  Decent shopping, etc.

least: I agree that better public transportation is needed.  I also don't like how the cost of living here doesn't really jive with wages (we still have a relatively high cost of living here compared to other parts of the country, especially when you take Jax's below average salaries into consideration.  It bugs me and one of the reasons why I still think about moving back to Orlando where pay is higher, but I can't deal with the traffic down there lol).

  • I'm trying to start posting here more again, so can I play?

My favorite is the natural beauty... I love all the lakes/ponds and forests, the expansive skies that change every day, the beaches and the thunderstorms.

Least favorite: The west side. And the fact that I have to drive there for work every day.

edit: OH and the overabundance of really bad (slow) drivers.

  • Favorite: my family is here

Least favorite: I wish it was more walkable. And a lot of the people.

  • Ditto everyone else basically.  Best is stuff to do and places to eat.  Worst is how spread out everything is.

Kappa - there are certainly some crappy things about Jacksonville, but I'm not sure Jacksonville is considered HCOL by any stretch of the imagination.

    Jacksonville - 89.1 (US average is 100)

Florida as a whole is considered to have a HCOL and Jacksonville is no exception.  The problem is that, typically, areas with a HCOL also have higher salaries to compensate, but salaries in Jax are pretty low.  I've actually read several articles about this so I'll have to find them (one of them was in the Jacksonville Business Journal I think). It's sad how people have become so accustomed to the HCOL here that it doesn't even faze them anymore.  Sure, there are other cities where the COL is astronomical (San Francisco, NY, etc.) which makes Jax look cheap by comparison but it's all relative.  My older sisters live in a little podunk town up north where the COL is really low (you can get a very nice starter home for less than $100k) but, surprisingly, they make more money up there than they would in the same position here and that's just one example.  Kind of puts things in perspective.

I say all the time that I'd move back up north in a heartbeat if it weren't for the snow (my body doesn't deal well with extremely cold temperatures due to health reasons).  One of the only things keeping us here are our parents. We want to be near them when we start a family.

I'd love to read those articles if you can find them.  Everything I'm finding shows most of FL is MCOL/LCOL except for places in South Florida like Ft. Lauderdale (116%), Boca (104%) and Miami (116%) which are a little higher than average, but certainly not compared to real metropolitan areas like DC (124%) Boston (140%) and NYC (161%).

Even Orlando is still under the average (93%), so I'm not sure the reason for your pity on us unsuspecting fools who are all under the assumption that we're not HCOL... since we're not. lol

    (All figures from city-data.com)

We can trade anectodal exceptions to the actual numbers all day long.  Just because Jax is a higher COL than your sister's "podunk" town does not make Jax HCOL.
