Entertainingly Shady Housing

I saw 2 places today, one apartment and one sort of house, both weirdly shady.

The sort of house was kind of like a duplex, except it wasn't actually attached, but just sitting on the property along side the bigger house.  The guy showing it was a co-owner.  He told me that 1) his father had passed away this morning.  He was relatively young and was diagnosed with cancer only two weeks ago; 2) the larger house is occupied by this guy's step-mother and brother, and they aren't currently on speaking terms, I gathered partly due to the untimely demise of the mother; and 3) the locked shed between the houses is strictly off limits.

There's nothing like a locked shed that's strictly off limits and tons of family drama to make you NOT want to rent a place.

The apartment had many issues, but the manager was the biggest one.  He tried to pull a number of fast ones on me about the location (duh, I grew up here) and other features.  But the weirdest part was that there was this couple arguing with another guy in the management office.  It wasn't in English but I could guess it was about money somehow.  Then the manager and the other guy had this discussion (in English, while I was sitting there):

Guy:  They say their income is 2x the monthly rent, but their tax return says it's not.

Manager:  I don't care what their tax return says, our computer says they have the money and it's always right.

Guy:  But that means they lie on their taxes.  Or they won't be able to cover the rent.

Manager:  I don't care.  We need to fill this building.

Crooked and unprofessional!  Just what you want in your landlord.

  • Wow! Sorry your search for a new place has been so difficult. At least you found out the landlord was crooked and unprofessional before moving to that location. Hope you guys find a place soon.

  • Wow that's really crazy - I don't think I've ever heard of a "duplex" like that!

I agree with Bootsie - at least you found out before you signed a lease or anything. Hope you have better luck soon!

  • Uh whoa lol. That is some serious shadiness going on. Sometimes you just have to laugh to keep from crying! I too hope the house hunt goes better from here.
