She got the notification RE DD's ECI evaluation (which is this Wed) and wanted to check-in. She told me she was really hoping DD would be crawling by now and she is glad I called ECI. This made me feel a bit vindicated because I've been hearing, "leave her alone, she'll do things when she is ready, some babies skip crawling," from people, which makes me feel like I'm being a paranoid mom!
But, when I say she can't crawl, I mean she has no method of getting from point A to point B - she can't roll around, scoot on her butt, army crawl, or even get into the hands and knees position. Greg and I got excited this week when she moved two inches in the forward direction in an army crawl. And she has trouble pulling to stand, (her feet have to be in the right position), and she isn't the greatest cruiser, which we are assuming is because she hasn't had enough practice because she can't crawl over to stuff and do it. She can, however, walk holding our hands, stand alone for a few seconds, and push herself into a bear crawl position (from which she just started doing a giant split to get to sitting - which doesn't seem to me to be the normal way to get to sitting!).
So, the pedi seemed confused about why DD isn't crawling because some of her
other gross motor skills are on track. It's seems like all of the skills involving tummy time are the ones in which she is delayed, so DH and I are hoping that's all it is!
BUT, now the pedi also wants to keep an eye on potential sensory processing issues because of the crawling issue and DD's lack of eating and her fussiness. I have definitely noticed she is different from the other babies at Gymboree, not only because she can't crawl, but also because she gets really overwhelmed, especially when other babies invade her personal space. I am hoping it's just because she has no way of moving away from them, while they can crawl all over her (and sometimes pull her hair). And I am hoping the lack of eating is because she is still nursing 7 times a day, because she is starting to eat a wider variety of foods, they are just in very small quantities. The pedi wants me to cut down on the nursing (to four times a day) and see if that helps.
Anyway, I just felt the need to get that off my chest because sometimes I feel like I am going crazy wondering what is going on! (And, yeah, sometimes I feel like I am going crazy because I'm taking care of a fussy baby who can't move and doesn't eat and I can't leave for more than 2-3 hours and I keep hearing there may be something wrong from the doctor and "she's fine" from everyone else). I really hope we get some answers this week.
Re: The pedi called yesterday
Wow! She sounds exactly like my niece, who has/had underdeveloped core muscles for no known reason. She did the split sit, too, and could walk holding someone's hands (for HOURS nonstop!), was a somewhat fussy eater, etc. She used to cry when the wind blew on her face or at loud noises and got overwhelmed in crowds or groups of kids.
She went to some Occupational Therapy sessions, though, and got it all sorted out! She's now almost 8 years old and is very comfortable at school, goes swimming, dancing, etc. and only requires headphones when she's at places like a wedding and the music is naturally too loud. And she's wicked smaht, too!
I think you're doing exactly what you need to do for Lily and I'm sure that she will get what she needs (if anything). You're a great mama!
I'm glad you are feeling supported by your physician and I think you are doing the right thing. Since she is nearing a year she should be trying to get around somehow. I don't think when people have said not to worry it was to make you feel crazy or put your worries down, but more to offer reassurance. I know I have given that advice because I was so oversensitive to Ben not doing everything exactly when people thought he should. I really got myself worked up and feel like I didn't enjoy things as much as I could have. I think we are just so aware of developmental delays now that we often jump on things before there are really issues, but I absolutely think you have given Lily every opportunity to catch up and someone who specializes in this will get her right back on track. Good luck to you and Lily!
I can't remember a single time where you have seemed disappointed in Lily! You are clearly a very proud and attentive mom! Like the others, I am glad your pedi is being supportive and good luck with the evaluation next week. I hope you get some answers!
