So I hit up some community garden sales this weekend. Not as good a haul as last year when I got a bunch of hellebore and spiderwort for a buck each.
But I did see a tree. And bought it.
Kousa dogwood (cornus kousa for NB)-- beautiful, about 3 feet tall, in great shape. FOR $5!!!!! I just love the way the leaves sit on the branches, it reminds me of butterflies coming to rest. I can't wait to see it in bloom.
Now, we're redoing the backyard, which currently consists of one oversized deck and a bunch of weeds. I've been thinking about a small tree and due to the shade from our neighbor's looming cedars I'd narrowed it down to dogwood or indian plum. So it's not a total impulse buy. However, I haven't done any research beyond "will it grow here? how big?"
So, um. Any advice on growing this tree? I'd be starting the area from scratch, once I clear the weeds.
