Vinegar + baby clothing = chemical free clothing?

Hi! This is my first post here. Just wondering if any of you green mavens have heard that washing new, non organic baby clothing in vinegar will produce same/similar benefits (i.e. chemical free clothing) as is found in organic clothing? Does this make sense? Is this true? I read this somewhere and I'm having trouble verifying it.

Thanks!

Re: Vinegar + baby clothing = chemical free clothing?

  • Welcome!

    Unfortunately, it's not that easy.

Assuming you are referring to cotton clothing, "organic" refers to the growing and processing of the cotton plants and fibers.  If conventional growing methods are employed, then the cotton will not ever be organic.  I'm not sure what chemicals remain after the processing of cotton (my choice of organic fabric is based upon the environmental stress of conventional growing methods and not health implications).  So even if vinegar were able to remove residual chemicals from conventionally grown/processed cotton it will never have the same benefits, because the chemicals utilized in the production of the cotton will already be in the environment.

Using vinegar in lieu of chemical fabric softener is a great way to reduce your child's/your/the environment's exposure to chemicals, though.

    Does that answer your questions?
