Watering Peace Lily

I thought that one was supposed to water house plants once every week or two.  My peace lily absolutely droops if I don't water it every other day.  Is this too often?

The endes of the leaves are starting to get a little brown (which I thought was a sign of over-watering).

Sorry... no green thumb here.. a little advice please :(

Mine don't droop unless they are deprived of water for at least a month! How big are the pots, and how much water are you giving them when you water them?

How long have you had them? Have you ever repotted them?

  • It depends on the size of the plant and how much water you are giving it each time.  At my old job, I had a huge peace lily in my office (prob. about 5 ft. in diameter) that the plant service watered every two weeks.  By the time the plant service came, it was definitely droopy.  It scared me a few times because the plant would literally move, perking up after it got water.  So I started watering it once per week between waterings.  I have a smaller one at home (about 2 ft. in diameter).  I generally water it until water starts to flow into my overflow collecter and try to do that once a week to once every 2 weeks.  Mine gets brown if I forget to water.

  • I put mine in tub and soak it, then let it drain in there. Your soil may be compacted so think about repotting it.

Good method. Sometimes I sit them in water for a few days, then allow them to dry again gradually. They're very resilient plants. Mine are about 20 years old.

  • Oh! I may need to re-pot!    I bought a large spider plant and re-potted it and its off-shoots and they seem to be holding the water longer.  I was shocked at how compacted the roots were.  I bet the Peace Lily getting close to root-bound because I got it from the nursery around the same time and didn't re-pot that one.

Thanks.  Sorry for the brain blip there.   (I was giving about 4 cups of water at a time... until the water came through the drainage holes at the bottom.  The plant is an average sized one -- not a monster like it will be in 20 years from now!)  Just looking at the pot I feel guilty because, man, I should have realized the poor thing just needs a larger container.)

    Thanks again!!  Great help!
