LED-LCD HDTV recs? Try 3D?

We're getting a new TV to replace our 5 year old 55 inch projection HDTV.
Our min requirements are 55 inch, prefer LED/LCD, 1080p, 240Hz refresh, best contrast ratio.

I've been stuck on this Visio due to the great reviews and very nice price tag. $1600 from our local SamsClub or Amazon. It was top TV 2010 at CES and cnet great reviews. Visio XVT553SV

Then if we want to venture into 3D, which I'm not really sold on yet, Amazon has this Toshiba for an amazing deal that comes with 4 pair of active 3D (battery powered) glasses for $1500. Still 1080p 240Hz. Not really many reviews on this one, maybe it's new? Toshiba 55WX800U I get motion sickness pretty easily and I'm thinking I'd like to wait until 3D doesn't require glasses.

Don't really want to spend more than $2000, since we'll just get the next new technology in about 5 years. I like the thin bezel on the Toshiba, Visio's always seem so bulky aroudn the screen frame (although 3 inch thickness v 1.25 inch thickness isn't that big of deal as we're putting in on a console stand not the wall).

Any recs or opinions on good HDTVs? TIA!

  • We have that Vizio.  Love it for the most part, we got it back in January.  The colors come across well, it keeps up with DH's video games, sports look wonderful, the picture is great. We really like the built in apps.  It connects to our wireless router without any problems.

Only complaints - the one Xbox status app crashes the TV - there was one other app that I don't remember the name of that also crashed the TV, it wasn't Netflix or Amazon.  By crash - the thing turns off and the logo flashes for 10-15 minutes before you can get it to turn back on.    Also the slide out keyboard on the remote has an odd layout, but I don't use it much.

We skipped the 3D this time around, I have several 3D monitors at work, which do not require glasses.  Figured we'd wait to adopt until they come down in price and there were more movie/tv/game options.   Vizio, at least back around Christmas, was coming out with a 65 in one with passive glasses, same ones you'd use at the digital movie theatres, not sure of the price on that one.

Looks like the Toshiba a new one.  It also seems to be only an edge lit LED, not a full array one, which did seem to make a difference when we were shopping in store.  It also only does wifi b.   Toshiba REGZA 55WX800U and Vizio XVT553SV - CNET Reviews http://t.co/V9FTRr

  • Thank you for your comments! We have a PS3 so hopefully won't run into the freezing app issue on gaming apps. I did see somewhere where a 3rd party app had frozen someones tv too, but not that bad where it crashes. DH doesn't use apps in his everyday life, just a couple things like weather on our Directv and i'm just has ok with using my windows phone 7 for apps.

I didn't realize the Toshiba was edge lit only. The Vizio 65inch passive 3D is edge lit too, and around $3300, but only 1mil:1 contrast and 120hz. 65 inches would be nice though...And I agree with you on waiting for 3D. There are a few other passive options out there, but I'd rather wait until you don't need glasses and get a larger screen at that.

So, we ordered the Vizio from Sams last night - should be here between Thursday and next week. Big Smile

  • :)

The app wasn't a game it was 1337 Pwn, it was more of a update what all your friends were doing on xbox live, they have a similar app for iPhone.  Still not sure why it was needed, as you can just turn on the xbox and see the same thing.   I think it was the blockbuster one was the other one, I just removed it from the list at the bottom.

DH does use the twitter app, it works fine.  The Pandora app is wonderful.    Hulu  plus, I don't like the content, we have the same stuff with the on demand feature of our cable box.   Netflix (loads about the same as using the 360 or PS3) and Amazon on demand work well.  The weather app is fine.

I think the most annoying thing DH has done with the TV is using the split screen PIP (which does let you use more than one input) to watch a sports game and play a video game at the same time.

The inputs are nice - you can rename them vs having to remember which HDMI port goes to which device.   Cable/360/PS3/Sat etc  you can also customize the lighting on the TV by which input you are using.  You can put on the optimal game one for the game systems (sometimes you need to change it when you use the PS3 for a bluray)

I got the 3D vizio specs mixed up between the 65 in passive one and the 55 in active one (we'd been looking at the 55 in one, but went with the non 3d one)
