Cupcake bakeries?

My mom and I are getting focused on my upcoming baby shower, and we decided we want to do cupcakes instead of one big cake. I offered to bake them, but she is concerned that we will run out of time, so she'd like to outsource. I know there are a lot of cupcake aficionados on here, so I figured this was the best place to ask about a recommendation for bakery to contact. We're not looking for anything too crazy or expensive, just simple (probably lemon) cupcakes for about 30-40 people. The shower will be in Boothbay, but my mom works in Portland so anywhere between the two (even up into the Camden if they're really great!) could work. Any suggestions? TIA!

  • Two Fat Cats!  I have heard great things on here about them and my BIL and SIL love them too!

  • Well my lovely, you know my affection for Two Fat Cats as they made my wedding cake and we go way back (I've never had a lemon cupcake there but if you special order.........). There is also Scratch in Portland...never been but have heard good things. I think they just won Portland Best Off.  And another...Tulips...or something....Clouts knows of them.... they call themselves a cupcakery.

Whatever you do...do not use Blue Sky Bakery. I want to kick them in the groin.

  • Tulips Cupcakery in Cumberland makes fabulous cupcakes! My favorites are the pumpkin and blueberry, but I bet they make lemon as well.

  • I came in to recommend Two Fat Cats, and apparently that's a popular choice!!

I get cupcakes from there every once in a while and they are DELISH - I'm not usually a huge frosting person but I would roll around in their frosting and lick it off myself.

  • Two Fat Cats in Portland.  I have never had Tulips but have heard good things. There is also a woman named Dany Lind in Turner who does cakes and cupcakes.  Her German Chocolate Cake is really delicious but that is the only thing I have ever had from her.  She made danieleandwayne's birthday cake.  I think that her pricing is more reasonable than TFC or Tulips but I am not sure.  You can see her stuff on FB if you look up Dany's Cakes.  Also, Maine Cakes and Cookies in Appleton did our wedding cake and I know that she does cupcakes as well, and she offers both European and American buttercream if that matters to you.  Here is her web page.

  • Thanks all!

I'm sending Mum over to grab a sample from Two Fat Cats this week (jealous!) and get an idea of their offerings, although with all the great reviews I've heard from you all I'm sure they're fantastic! Another friend recommended Cream & Sugar Bakery in Portland, but they are a made to order place, so no dice on samples. I do like that they strive to use all natural and locally sourced ingredients and have a good price point. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Now I want a mountain of cupcakes from all the bakeries!

  • It sounds like you already have a lot of good suggestions, but I just wanted to add European Bakery in Falmouth. They did my cupcake tower and dessert buffet for my wedding and everything was really yummy!

Ditto!  Their (European Bakery!) cupcakes were better and better priced than the other bakeries we tried.  I also just had a dozen cupcakes from Two fat cats and was not impressed. I'm not sure if they gave me day old ones since I was using my living social coupon or maybe it was just an off batch.  IMHO, Shaw's makes them better.

  • Totally spaced on European Bakery, thank you! I think they did the cake for my friend's wedding last summer, and it was excellent. I'll tack that on to Mum's list of places to scope out and get a sample.

  • Obviously, Two Fat Cats is getting rave reviews, so I'm sure you've made up your mind, but I just read a new cupcake bakery is opening up on Congress Street in Portland - not sure when exactly, but they have a sign in the window - Buttercup Bakery/East End Cupcakes.  Seems like they've only done made-to-order so far, but I imagine they'd have a regular retail line once they have the storefront - in case you want a comparison close by to TFC.  Their website is www.eastendcupcake.com.
