I'm having two couples and their kids over for dinner in a few weeks. I used to work with the one guy, DH still does. I don't know his wife much. The other couple live in the neighborhood. I talk to the wife almost every week, but not so much the husband. So 6 adults and 4 kids (2 months to 2.5 yrs) for dinner on a Thursday night. There are no allergies and no vegetarians or other dietary restrictions.
I've never cooked for any of these people. I know the one couple has a healthy lifestyle and the other couple can share a can of condensed soup and an open-faced bologna sandwich for dinner.
I was thinking simple cheese and crackers out when people get here. Since it's a work night I don't want to drag things out.
Dinner: chicken kabobs (chicken, yellow squash, zucchini, red onions); spinach salads; fresh rolls; and I'd like to do some sort of rice/pasta/potato side but don't know what.
Dessert: Homemade peach sorbet and pound cake and possible grilled peaches. I've got a trial run of the peaches this week to see if I can pull it off.
I know my kid will eat the meal, the 10 month old and 2 month old are not eating solids, and the other kid's parents always bring food.
Does this sound good? What other side would go?
Re: Menu review/input
Something's the tiniest bit off for me with the kebabs, but I can't put my finger on it, so <shrug>.
Scalloped potatoes gratin
Roasted mustard potatoes (my top choice I think)
Almond rice pilaf
Dessert sounds divine.
I totally understand weeknight effort, but maybe add baby carrots and ranch as an app if you're feeling sprightly
Hm, maybe my kebab feelings are just that we generally use peppers so the list looks different...

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I hate peppers so I never put them on. Those potatoes look PERFECT though.
I think I can handle some carrots and dip. Maybe even a couple other veggies
I think it looks great for a weeknight dinner. I was going to suggest a Greek-inspired couscous or orzo salad but the potato recipe looks great. Dessert REALLY looks great and I hope the peaches work out for you.
I'd actually favor some prosciutto or pepperoni with the cheese and crackers over veggies but I think either one would fill out a good yet quick appetizer. Have fun!
