dog owners-ticks?

so what do you do to prevent these nasty little things? today hudson brought my crazy to a new level when a tick looking something like a walking green olive fell from his skin.  apparently they look like they are going to explode after sucking days and days worth of blood- then they fall off.

anywho, he will be at petco tomorrow- getting cleaned and possibly shaved ( what the hell- he is not a show dog). what else can i do? the kids are all over him and he lays on the couch- are collars and baths safe?

Re: dog owners-ticks?

  • Well not a dog owner but even though my cat is an indoor cat, from March through November we use Frontline to prevent fleas and ticks. It's an easy, once-a-month dose of stuff I put on his scruff before bed that night and we're done. No one can touch him til it's dry so we just do it before bed, by morning he's set and we haven't had issues since we started using it. He had fleas in November, I almost had a freakin heart attack! But one does killed them and the monthly doses are keeping it away. Easy and effective. My SIL uses it on her dog - she alternates years between Frontline and K9 Advantix.

  • ditto frontline - easiest solution
  • Yup, frontline...
  • We also use Frontline April to Oct/Nov and I spray him daily with this all natural repellant called "Bug Off." The Frontline only kills them once they get to skin so I wanted a little extra help to keep the fleas and ticks off of him and from being brought into the house.
  • Ugg ... ticks :(  I have two labs that hunt in the fall when tick season is the worst!

Last year, I was pulling 25-30 off each dog (not embedded, just walking on their fur).  At the time we were using frontline and it was just not working for us because it doesn't kill ticks until they bite.  Because of that, they were bringing them into the house (even if we brushed and washed them before letting them in) and that was just not acceptable!  We ended up switching to K9 Advantix because it helps repell them.  We also use something similar to RIbythesea when it gets really bad (don't know the name).

     Good luck!  Ticks are GROSS!!
