Suggestions for organic fertilizer and weed control?

I have heard that sprinkling finely ground cornmeal in the flower beds will keep weeds from germinating.  It won't kill existing weeds, of course, those still need to be pulled but ast least new weeds aren't supposed to spring up.  I'm wondering if anyone has tried this and if it works?  If it works, I'm going to get a restaurant sized bag from Costco.

We have a large flower bed almost on top of our septic field so any fertilizer/weedkiller would seep into the septic field and make it's way into our ground water.  (We're on a well, also.)  Looking for good suggestions for both fertilizer and weed control that is organic.  (We currently use a fertilizer that is made of a fish emulsion but it stinks like dead fish for the first 24-48 hours after I spray it on.  It's bad enopugh that if you walked up our sidewalk, you would start looking for a dead animal.)

Cornmeal may or may not help suppress weeds, but it will definitely be extremely attractive to snails, slugs, ants, earwigs, flies, crickets, cockroaches, etc.

I don't know of any organic fertilizer that smells nice (and that includes decomposing cornmeal), but there are many on the market. Espoma makes a complete line.

  • Just dig the weeds by hand.  It's highly effective, aerates your lawn, and has no harmful side effects.

Is your well really right next to your septic field though?  That seems like it would be more a of problem than weeds or chemicals.  Our well and septic are on opposite ends of our yard (one in the front yard and one in the back).  They should be as far away as possible.

  • Weedkiller: Horticultural Vinegar.  Bradfield brand comes in gallon jugs.
